Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

Aroma: Smells of dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, some nice hop notes.
Appearance: Mildly hazy reddish-copper, small creamy off-white head, lots of lacing on the glass.
Flavor: A really nice taste, complex and enjoyable, immediate taste is sweet and fruity, flowing nicely into caramel, and then a wonderful sweet hop backing finishes it off.
Palate: Really smooth for an 11% beer that somehow has no alcohol burn, really nice mouthfeel.
Overall Impression: I'm impressed! This was a very nice beer, it came at a reasonable price, and had a nice taste. Great job of making a big beer, giving it complex flavors, and hiding alcohol pretty well. Really nicely done beer by Lagunitas.

Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is dark amber. Aroma and taste are rich hops, flowers, fruits, syrop and caramel. Very thick and syropy.

22 oz bottle. Pours red amber, with a quick pour giving a light yellowy tan head. Caramel aromas with some bitter hops, dark fruits, and a bit of alcohol, but a touch muted. Flavors of caramel, bread, toasty biscuit, a touch of hoppiness, some raisin, and some significant alcohol. Bitter citrus hops come through in the finish with some more alcohol. Tasty beer once I get past the initial alcohol shock, but the alcohol remains a bit intrusive throughout.

Had a chance to try the 2007 vintage at Max’s American Beer Fest. Pours a dark, translucent amber with a wispy head. Aroma has some characteristics of a fresh barleywine and some of an aging one. Some hops, lemons and grapefruits mostly, some sweetness like cookie dough and caramel and some light nuttiness. Flavor is the same, sweet caramel, doughy, some crackers, a little bit of grapefruit. Slick and salty on the tongue which is my favorite part of an aging barleywine. I’d say this one is probably peaking.

Bottle 66cl. @ home.Clear medium amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, drye berry - fruity, raisin, prune, moderate hoppy, orange, light alcoholc. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, and a dty finish. Body is medium to full, texture is syrupy - oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20090112]

Bottle at the Spotify tasting. Big heavy barley wine aroma. Bit more cultured in the mouth. Good toffee, nice sweet jammy fruit and a tangerine edge. Good big hops.

courtesy of markwise. Thanks for this amazing gem. early 08 bottle. Pours copper with beige head, nice golden lacing. Aroma had the typical Lagunitas signature, strong notes of caramel malts. Taste, some hops, really malty with some caramel and faint brown sugar.

Sampled on draft at Smokin Joe’s in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a dark caramel-brown color with a trace of a khaki head. The aroma was bitter, sour, fruity and a bit harsh. The flavor was bitter fruity hops with sour malts and a caramelized pineapple element. The finish was long, sour, malty and fruity. There was a sour off flavor to this one that I found unpleasant.

Medium yellow beige head. Deep red body. Intense strway grainy malt aroma, very firm and deep, with raisiny caramelly notes and traces of citric hops. Dry-sweet intense straw and malts taste with caramelly burnt almonds notes. Fruity alcoholic notes, too. Citric, bitter hoppy notes throughout, as well as toffee. Dry burnt almonds and citrus aftertaste. Very, very good. (0.65l bottle shared by gr0ve.)
