Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 8 Oct 2010) Amber colour with brief, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with dried apricots, citrus and caramel. Malty, fruity taste with notes of citrus, dried apricots, caramel and a generous earthy, citrussy bitterness in a fairly vinous finish with a puff of warming alcohol. Full body, fairly sweet. Warming ... hoppy ... and very nice.

Tap at Rattle n Hum. I had the 2008 and the 2010 side by side. Both poured maroon-brown with soft, white heads. 2008 had lots of ripe fruit, roasty malts and toffee in the flavor. 2010 had similar traits but less pronounced, with much stronger hops. Flavors were both sweet, but the 2008 was much mellower, more attenuated and dynamic. 2010 was good, with a more robust bitterness. Both were full-bodied with soft carbonation. 2008 finished sweet with some semi-syrupy, while the 2010 finished similarly but with more bitters and dryness. 2010 I give a 4, 2008 I give a 3.7. I’ll round up to a 3.9 total.

11th October 2008. GABF. This version a ’lightweight’ 9.7% abv. Clear brown beer. Sour aromatic malt. Quite a hoppy in the finish. I normally like this brewery - note to self to re-rate.

Bottle. Poured a brown amber with a red tint and minimal head. Aroma was full of grainy notes as well as some sweet notes. Flavor was thick with a strong malt flavor and underlying alcohol notes. Nice and thick on the tongue.

twenty’aught-8 version, so didn’t last long. 9.7% this year!. cloudy amber, thick small brown head with good lacing. sweet malty, caramelly, hoppy, a little towards "old" hops, but stll rather fresh for a BW. flavor is malty, accented by flowery hops, and a nice dose of bitterness, also caramelly sweetness, faint old beer taste too. ends sweet and malty. aftertaste is dry sweet and malty. even though it’s not that dry in the flavor, you can feel the dryness in the aftertaste. lots of everything in this one.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown to amber with a thin beige head. Aroma is sweet with malts and caramel. Taste is full of malt and caramel, but has just enough hops and alcohol tingle to keep you interested from the top to bottom of your glass.
