Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

On tap at Rattle n Hum bar in New York, NY. An amber/red coloured pour with virtually no head to speak of. Sweet, malty aroma and very American. Tastes sweet, caramel, dark fruit, rich and hoppy. This would probably be even better with a couple of years age on it. Great stuff from Lagunitas.

Draught. Good caramelly aroma. Slightly hazy dark red brown colour. Very sweet and caramelly aroma. Some good hop and alcohol, but far from enough to balance this much too sweet beer.

Draught at Lagunitas Brewery. Red-amber color with lace. Fruity, estery nose. Sweet, sweet, honey and rich malt flavor with canned peaches, wine, and a bitter finish. This needs to be aged.

Bottle shared with friends. Pours golden orange with a medium tan head. Aroma has a caramel sweetness with malt and a little alcohol. The flavour is sweet with caramel, raisins and pine followed by an alcohol warmth in the finish.

8/26/2009 2009 Vintage Pours a crystal clear dark orange/amber with reddish hues when held to light. Creamy off white head dissipates quickly but never really leaves us. Smells a bit sweet with caramel and candy sugar, lots of pine and citrus in there as well. Malty sticky sweet caramel and dark sugars up front. Attacked by pine and citrus midway through until the malt reasserts itself. Finishes with a lingering sweet bitterness. Sweet sticky chewy mouthfeel, big thick body, light carbonation. Nice barleywine. I really could have used a bit more hops, but it was good as is. I can see this one getting sickening sweet with some age as the hops start to fade.

3 oz. sample on tap at Brouwer's Caf for Hard Liver, pours orangey amber. Aroma of sweet caramel malt/toffee and candied malts. Flavour of candied sugar, caramel/toffee, almost too cloying in sweetness, but just balanced right. Delicious.

Pour is a copper with a small tan head. Aroma is of hops with some carmel malt sweetness. Flavor is a first full of hops. Then some brown sugar and chocolate malts make an appearance. Finish has some dark fruit left on the tounge. Alcohol is well hidden. Decent Americanized barley wine.
