Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

Bottle: (2015) Clear sparkling, deep copper-ruby with a soapy off-white ring. Beautiful looking pour..... Aroma of toffee, berries..... Flavour is toffee/caramel malt, dark fruits, bitter, leafy hops. Very smooth....moderate alcohol warmth. Excellent.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/19/2015. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red/copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, plum, apple, citrus rind, pine, caramel, toast, brown sugar, light toffee, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, dark malt, and fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, plum, apple, citrus rind, pine, caramel, toast, brown sugar, toffee, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, citrus rind, plum, apple, pine, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops, dark malt, and fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and fairly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light-moderate warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible American barleywine style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops, dark malt, and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV, even with the noticeable warming finish. A highly enjoyable offering.

Barley wine bottle share on 1/31. Another very good barley wine, they’re all starting to blend together. Strong northwestern hops presence with their typical citrus notes. Sweet and thick but on the lighter side of the many of the American barley wines. Mildly fruity with a touch of molasses.

On tap. Pours an orange garnet with light head. Aromas of oranges and brown sugar. Flavors of malts, toffee and grassy hops.

Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Murky orange-brown body, thin cream ring of carbonation. Nose of caramel, toffee, and heavily oxidized, flabby citrusy hops; dirty and earthy with hints of alcohol. Sweet body with toffee, buttery caramels, raisin, and faded bitter hops. Rum notes develop after a few sips. Rough palate; tastes somewhat stale.

2011 bottle at home, pours hazy brown with reddish hues around the sides of the glass, medium off white head that fades to a thin film that sits the length of the glass. Aroma is lovely, big floral honey, boozy alcohol, caramel malts, maple. Flavor is big and malty with still some nice hops balancing things out, but still more malt forward with nuts and sweet caramel ending with only mild alcohol. Nice!

A - Cloudy dark orange to brown appearance.
S - Very sweet and lots of candi sugar. Almost like drinking flat cola
T - Pineapple and bananas. It’s intensely sweet. Too fresh on tap. Some other fruits but hard to pick out.
M - Very heavy body. mellow carbonation.
O - on tap, it’s an odd beer. Very fresh barley-wine is not very appealing. Needs some time. Rating it for what it could be with age so giving it slightly higher marks.

May 2010: One of 24 taps at the Greenroom in Flagstaff, labelled as Gnary wine (12%abv) and no Olde mentioned that I remember. Hope this is the correct beer! The beer came a deep amber/mahogany brown with a thin off-white head trying to sit on top. The aroma was malty, sweetish, with caramel and molasses being the sweet smells I got. There were also hints of mild citrus notes, oranges mostly. The flavours and taste followed the smells, richer and with an alcohol feel coming through, but sweet rather than dry or bitter. Any hop input must have come across as the citrus hints because the brew showed no other signs of a hop presence that I could find. Certainly different and a good night cap on which to end my 2nd ’allocated drinking day’ on my US road trip.
