Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

650ml bottle @ Tommyknocker. Pours mahogany color with a thin off white head. Malty, bready, dark roasty, plummy aroma. Flavor has sweetness, almonds , dried fruits and some alcohol. Warming alcohol in finish for sure.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a dark ruby red color with a small disappearing beige head. Huge burnt sugar, alcohol and butterscotch aroma. Notes of resiny hops as well. Sweet malt flavor upfront. Lots of buttery brown sugar and light tobacco flavors. Bittersweet malt and spicy hops are the rule of thumb here. Notes of black pepper, marmalade and toffee. Complex and hoppy. A satisfying warming alcohol finish crowns this delicious barleywine ale.

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a semi-dark brown color with a one finger white foamy head that gets bubbly as it dissipated. Light bubbly lacing sticks and slides.
The smell had a syrupy caramel malt over top of bitter citrus rind, a light tobacco also shows up as it warms up.
The taste combines the bitter citrus to the caramel mixes in a light toffee. Tobacco is slightly there but really light. Bitter citrus aftertaste leads to a semi-dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. Carbonated nicely as an American Barleywine, harshness pierces with an ample amount of bitterness but nothing over the top.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good American Barleywine but nothing really over the top.
