Le Merle is a rustic ale, pale in color, inspired by the rich brewing traditions of the Flanders region. Abundant hops and a Belgian yeast strain contribute exotic aromas of tropical fruit.

For all she has contributed since the brewery’s founding, North Coast Brewing is pleased to honor our Merle, co-founder Mark Ruedrich’s wife, with Le Merle (the Blackbird), a subtle sophisticated Belgian-style Saison beer.

Bottle @ Post-Easter Procrastination, Ulfborg. Pours clear amber with airy white head. Clear aroma of malt and fruit, with hoppy notes and estery touches. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt and fruit, with bitter, hoppy notes and estery touches. Salty hints. Estery and acidic aftertaste. Okay but not funky enough for the style.

Nice mellow saison from North Coast. Poured into a Duvel tulip and watched the carbonation center on the low point and trickle slowly but steadily up in a column. Small creamy head, on rich golden body. Aroma is musty, floral yeast, taste adds some butter, and spice. All around well executed saison,

Clear caramel color with a fine foamy off white head. Not any typical saison aroma. Caramel, some spices, yeast and some alcohol. Fine body. Tad sweet and a moderate bitterness. A bit oily texture. Complex flavor. Toffee, yeast, fruity and some spices. Decent and powerful, but not quite my ale.

must be bird week at the bocktown. on tap. Cleaner yellow. decent head. smells like a great tart beer but then I’m disappointed on the tongue. More like a sweeter, somewhat cloying palate. Not real bitter and locking in hops, this is a plus for a laget lover like me. Has a slight warming sensation going down the gullet. Rather fairly flat. Just wish it was a good tasting as the smell.

Bottle from Beermoth, Manchester. Clear, pale gold. Thick, bubbly, lasting, white head. Lovely, toasty, granary bread. Soft, peachy fruit. Light yeast. Taste is yeasty dry. Banana sweet. Soft, chewy palate. Nice and airy. Finishes soft sweet, and yeasty dry. Nice saison, but finishes a little too sweet.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours tiny hazy golden with a frothy offwhite head that leaves lots of soapy trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is estery and phenolic with biscuits, baked pears, marzipan, white pepper corns, hay, lemon zest and banana bread. Taste is tiny sweet, tiny bitter, estery and tiny phenolic with oatmeal cookies, hay, banana bread, pear skins, caramelized almonds, cereal, white pepper corns, leather, orange zest, lemon zest and dry soil. Mouthfeel is sparkling, lightly dry, tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is slightly bitter, slightly estery and tiny phenolic with cereal, banana bread, hay, white pepper corns, pear skins, dry wood, orange zest and lemon zest. Bit cloying with banana esters. good, but would have preferred something more refreshing…
