Le Merle is a rustic ale, pale in color, inspired by the rich brewing traditions of the Flanders region. Abundant hops and a Belgian yeast strain contribute exotic aromas of tropical fruit.

For all she has contributed since the brewery’s founding, North Coast Brewing is pleased to honor our Merle, co-founder Mark Ruedrich’s wife, with Le Merle (the Blackbird), a subtle sophisticated Belgian-style Saison beer.

bottle. Lemony, dusty nose, dry fruits. Orange-gold color. Sweet, biscuity flavor, nicely hopped but too sweet. Good bitter at the finish but too sweet over all.

Nice smell. It has some wine as well as funky hay and some fermented field fruit. Pours cloudy orange without much head or lacing. A sweet tangy aftertaste with soft carbonation. Nice beer - big thanks to Chris for this bottle.

Bouteille 750ml.

Bottle vintage 2012 - Citrus, earthy hops and some light barnyard and yeast. Thick medium head cloudy gold. Banana with some citrus and a yeasty finish. Very rich mouthfeel. Not as refreshing as I would have hoped. Strong and rich which makes it off for me in this style.

Bottle at home. Pours a hazy dark straw colour with a soapy off-white medium and frothy head. Pretty carbonated. Sweet and fruity aroma of pale malt, sweet corn, hay, Belgian yeast, mango and spices. Very distinct and pleasant. The flavour follows up with a round and more bitter version of the aroma, and has a dry ending. I also find wood in the flavour. Theres also an alcohol warmth lingering in the end. Soft and silky mouthfeel, and has a medium bitterness. In the end a very delightful and tasteful interpretation of a Belgian saison.

Bottle. Pours golden, with a quite fierce creamy head receding to finger thickness. Aroma is yeast with a lot of sweet citrus and apricot fruitiness, as well as some hay. Full creamy body, with a lively carbonation. Flavour is sour with yeast, some funky notes of barn and lots of fruit, as well as kandi, oak and some earthy notes.

Bottle @ home. Pours a milky, dull yellow-orange appearance with an off white head. Honey, herbal, floral hoppy, tropical/citrus fruity, mild lemon, a bit funky aroma. Tangy, orange fruity, honey, somewhat chewy malty, citrusy, light pineapple, tangy, floral flavor. Ok.

Bottle at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. It pours cloudy light orange, with a medium white head. The nose is spice, orange, dried mango, dried apricot and raisin. The taste is very fruity, orange, mango, apricot, spice, hay, dough, hint of tartness and well hidden alcohol. Medium body, fine carbonation and velvety mouth-feel. Good fruit, flavoursome and very well balanced.
