Le Merle is a rustic ale, pale in color, inspired by the rich brewing traditions of the Flanders region. Abundant hops and a Belgian yeast strain contribute exotic aromas of tropical fruit.

For all she has contributed since the brewery’s founding, North Coast Brewing is pleased to honor our Merle, co-founder Mark Ruedrich’s wife, with Le Merle (the Blackbird), a subtle sophisticated Belgian-style Saison beer.

Purchased at the Lebanon Co-Op for about $11. Pulled right out of the fridge and poured into a chalice

A - Pale yellow in appearance with a hazy tone. The head was crystal clear about 5 fingers.

S - Very bready yeast, pineapple, kiwi and mangoes

T - The breadiness was very pronounced followed by the tropical fruits like Pineapple. I picked up some spiciness like pepper or garlic.

M - Incredibly dry beer. Dry hops but not too many and a huge carbonation.

O - This is a very standard Saison. Nothing too incredible but solid and easy to drink.

750 ML bottle, corked and caged. Thick, full white head with sheets of lace. I am engulfed in Belgian yeast aroma. Hints of fruit and hops as well.  Lemon zest, yeast, Earthy hops and a light bread flavor. A rather dry mouthfeel.  Very easy to drink. Nice.

(Bottle, 0.75 l, t Pikkulintu, 20110708) The beer poured orange and cloudy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, Belgian style yeast and spices. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, sweetness, spices, sourness and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and better. Way too sweet for my taste.

Bottle. Hazy gold with a large white head that collapses. Aroma of dough, lemon pudding, vanilla, flowers, cloves is not as vibrant as that description suggests. Moderately carbonated mouthfeel is creamy. Taste is sweet and doughy with oranges and lemon pudding. Alcohol sticks out a bit. Some spicy bitterness at the end as well as citrus flowers. Dries out a lot at the end. Not very rustic and a little too much sweetness for me, but a very nice finish.

750 ml bottle @Patricks. Hazy orange body with a fine, stable off-white head. Seductive aroma of citric fruit, oranges, barnyard, spices, caramel and hint of perfume. Flavor is refreshing fruity, mild malty, oranges, spices and a hint of warming alcohol. Fine body and pleasant finish with a certain bitterness. This is a fine and exiting sample of a solid Saison. Tastes just better and better for each bottle I have consumed, one of my favorite Saisons.
