Rather than simply darken up our current IPA, we decided several months ago to design an entirely new beer from the ground up. The beer features our Organic 2-Row base malt accented by additions of Crystal 60 and Weyermann Carafa III malts. This last grain is a special type of de-husked roasted barley imported from Germany that lends a charred black color and notes of roasted coffee and chicory without any tannic bitterness that would normally be contributed by the husks. The hop additions are many and generous, featuring Apollo, Horizon, and Nugget, clocking the beer in at 70 IBU. Over 22 pounds of Nugget hops were added directly to the fermenter in our first ever batch.
The sum of these parts is a befuddling, beautiful beer with an ABV of 7%. Big juicy hop flavors meld with rich roasted malts to create distinctively delicious ale. Hop bitterness is significantly more aggressive than our normal IPA, providing an interesting departure from the hop “niceness” that is our norm, all in all, something worth savoring, though perhaps not for the faint of heart.

Cask at Craft Pride, Austin, 16th February 2020. Pours a very dark brown. Aroma is dark malts. Taste is bitter and malty, bitter, malty, yeasty finish. Not had a BIPA on Cask, it’s welcome, but not sure it’s suited to the style

At the source: pours black with beige head. Aroma is piny and earthy and roasty. Taste is fairly bitter (because it was kegged super recently as I was told). Kind of roasty. Classic black IPA flavor.

Location: Draft at BRC, 4/1/14
Aroma: The nose is more roasty than hoppy, some caramel, and light pine notes
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a lighter brown head and some decent lace
Flavor: The flavor is medium sweet, with a good amount of roast, and a light hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a clean, roasty mouthfeel, and a mild dryness
Overall Impression: I thought this example of a Black IPA was just a little bit light on the IPA part of the equation. Still, this is a nice beer.

Bottle - Roast malts and hops. Jet black with a rich white head. Roasty malts with a hop bitterness that dominates to the finish. Although not quite a marriage, it is a hand off from dark to IPA.

On tap at the brewery during RBWG
Dark brown with a nice sized dark tan head and good lacing. Lots of roasted malts, pine, chocolate and grapefruit. A nice Bipa.

On tap at flying saucer Houston. Pour a clear deep brown with a khaki head that lasts throughout the beer and laces nicely. Aroma has a decent amount of roasted malt and pine hops. A bit clashing. Flavor begins with roasted malt and is joined by a bit of coffee and then pine in the finish.

On tap at the Petrol Station. Pours a very dark brown with a small beige head that lasts awhile leaving good sticky lacing. The aroma is a raisin malt and light roast. Medium mouthfeel with a smoke and coffee flavor. Easy to drink hiding the alcohol well. A very good black IPA from 512.
