The commemorative Stout is inspired by a recipe Benjamin Guinness – the son of Arthur Guinness – originally developed in 1817. It is the latest beer to be created by the Open Gate Brewery – the pilot brewery located at St. James’s Gate in Dublin – where Guinness brewers experiment with new styles and reinterpret historical brews.

This beer pours an inky black color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily to a film. Small patches of lace. Aroma of roast malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, bittersweet chocolate and a bit of earthy coffee. The finish is roasty with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Beer #4 of 17 for each day of the 2018 Winter Olympics - One for A Country Participating in the Games: #4 - Republic of Ireland Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall rich tan and creamy head, not nitrogenated of course, but looking nice. Aroma of rich must, mushrooms, basements, lactose, cream and roasted malt, almost burnt malt notes. Medium-bodied; Rich, assertive roasty flavours with malt and earth definitely noticeable, along with some lactose, cream and a lot of light coffee notes, along with raisins, plums and even a dose of licorice at the tail end. Aftertaste shows more of the roast and earth than anything else, but a touch of metal, a little thinness in the body and ending with a complex and rich sweetness from raisins and a big hit of chocolate. Overall, a nice stout from Guinness that shows much more depth than their typical stout, but also leaves a lot to be desired for as well, in terms of a real Foreign Stout that you would see close to the Equator. Nice to sample, but wish there was more in this one. I sampled this slightly stubby 33 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Fairfax, Virginia on 10-September-2017 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington during the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics in celebration of the next country from the world competing here on 12-February-2018.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with full tannish head. Aromas of creamy dark caramel, nutty vanilla, and sugary malts. Watery flavors of same, with a bit of chicory.

Bottle. A- Roasty, cocoa, subtle iron, subtle dark fruits. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Roasty, char, tobacco, cocoa, dry, slightly water, mild dark fruit. P- Medium body, slightly thin texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Almost a mix between the regular Guinness and the regular Export Stout. Lots of tobacco roastiness and a touch of dark fruit. Not bad but still a step behind the regular Export.
