It is the latest beer to be created by the Open Gate Brewery – the pilot brewery located at St. James’s Gate in Dublin – where Guinness brewers experiment with new styles and reinterpret historical brews.

Nice bottle there becker! Now that looks like a black beer! Mild roasty aroma. Taste is big and black and large and in-charge! Bitterness burnt sensation builds in the back of the throat. Not quite an impy but it sure wants to git thar. Yes, deep and rich, perhaps like other guinny exports. Borders a little on baltic as well. Strong man, big man, black man. Finish is a tad medicinal in the end, but overall I thought it to be a pretty good stout for 6%. Also has good carbonation for a guinny stout, too!

Bottle. Dark chocolate malt and fresh hay aroma. Black with giant brown head. Mildly sweet dark chocolate caramel malt, and mildly bitter ash and dry hay flavor. Good body. Lighter and drier than Guinness FES - nice.

Pitch black color and dark ruby highlights with a thick beige head and great retention. Very good lacing. Semi-creamy mouthfeel. Clean, chalky dark bakers chocolate and molasses flavor. Dry finish. 6.0 ABV is well hidden.

Dry as a bone, dark malt interwoven with unsweetened cocoa, anise, and hints of espresso and cherry. Esters on the underside add a pleasant fruitiness, while the back remains a firm mix of bitter java and roasted malt notes. Nose is a tad weak, chocolate and butter and yeast, but the pour comes out lovely, a deep dark brown that turns black in the middle with a lasting beige head and plenty of lacing. Medium body is good, but could use a little more heft. Altogether a nice stout, a solid reminder of why Guinness has been making dark beers for a couple centuries.

11.2oz bottle. Opaque black-brown body. Thin beige head. Roasty, oily black malt, bittersweet chocolate. Nails it for the style, tastes like the islands to me. Easy drinking, maybe even a pinch thin, but that just makes it that much more sessionable. Good.

Bottle from John's Marketplace. Pours a pitch black color, super dark, with a medium brown head. A big roasted malt nose. Heavy roast, metallic, lactose, light chocolate. Very good. Lovely beer. Reminds me a bit of the Special Export which I love. Great.

Bottle. Pours black, with a small, tan ring. Bittersweet chocolate aroma, chicory, maple and vanilla, and toffee. Sweet and a bit bitter. Light to medium body, with a sharp, oily, slightly acrid mouthfeel. This is a pretty nice, roasted stout.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Andover Liquors. Appearance is dark brown with red with light source directly behind, minimal sparkle, 1/2-finger width beige head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is chocolate, lightly roasted malts, earthy hops. Taste is chocolate, molasses, earth. Palate is medium bodied with thick texture, soft-to-average carbonation and mix of bitter and sweet finish. Overall, not an overly sweet stout but some decent complexity.
