The commemorative Stout is inspired by a recipe Benjamin Guinness – the son of Arthur Guinness – originally developed in 1817. It is the latest beer to be created by the Open Gate Brewery – the pilot brewery located at St. James’s Gate in Dublin – where Guinness brewers experiment with new styles and reinterpret historical brews.

Well I didn't even know this was coming out, so I was surprised to see it there on a supermarket shelf yesterday. So once upon a time, I remember the regular Guinness Extra Stout being something like this, that's a beer I miss. Also it's nice to have a Guinness without nitro! Good roast presence, touch of caramel but otherwise pretty dry. Medium palate/mouthfeel. Balanced, drinkable. edits: As I finished the rest of the 6 pack I just want to note again how I enjoyed each bottle of this. Also, left out the notes of chocolate definitely in there, hints at coffee too - and just a touch of that typical Guinness twang which is far more apparent in this beer compared to the draft version.

330 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 7/17/2017. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, herbal, and grass; with lighter notes of licorice, smoke, charcoal, raisin, plum, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, herbal, and grass; with lighter notes of licorice, smoke, charcoal, raisin, plum, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/grassy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, herbal, grass, light smoke/dark fruit, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an awesome foreign stout! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very rich and complex English malts; with balancing earthy hops and complementing restrained fruity yeast notes. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Black pour, small head of tan foam.
Sweet chocolate, roasted malt, toffee aromas.
Sweet from the chocolate and toffee, mild roasted malt, not very dry, which I miss.
Mouthfeel is just fine.
Only okay to me.
