The MERCI MAMAN 2 is a slightly smoked Saison of 4.5 vol% alc. The beer was created as recognition of brave mothers and women during the Great War 1914-18. The brewery always chooses a social project for a 3-year period. During this period, 10 % of the turnover generated by this beer is donated to the project. The recipe of this beer is therefore always ‘reinvented’ for each new project. This gives the brewer another opportunity to be creative. In its first initiative the brewery supported the Istalif project in Afghanistan, founded by Jenny Vanlerberghe. The project aims at giving women in Afghanistan a dignified and independent existence. Since 2018 the contribution of MERCI MAMAN 2 is attributed to Project KINDIA, a project that aims at providing children in India with decent education.

Bottle from a local bottle shop. Aroma is peppery Saison yeast with subtle smoke, lightly fruity with some citrus, grainy malt, more spicy notes. Flavour is light sweet and bitter with a medium body. Decent, more Saison than Smoked, lacks a little extra punch.

Clear golden colour with quick fading head. Aroma and flavour are smokey. It has a grainy sweetness. Not so much of the Saison element comes through in the taste. Very thin texture.

Bottle from Carrefour. Hazy golden, lasting, frothy, white head. Aroma of unripe banana, pear, apple peel, bread crust, yeast, pepper, herbs, tobacco leaves. Taste has sweetish apple & pear, low estery but slightly herbal profile; dry, yeasty, bready, cereally malty middle with low smokiness. Grassy hoppy finish, soapy-wheaty too, bit metallic, restrained fruitiness lingering. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Saison with a twist, but nowhere is it a Smoked.

33cl bottle: drank at home on 21st Mar 2020. Didn't really go for this, golden body, white head. Mild peaty smokey nose and taste, maybe some semi-sour citrus notes in there too.

Bottle @Johnny's Off License (Rome). Bruna, schiuma avorio media, non molto persistente. Al naso note affumicate leggere, un filo di speziatura, scorza di limone. In bocca è senza nerbo, leggermente amara e affumicata, slegata. Corpo esile, watery, carbonazione medio-leggera. Non ci siamo.

Bottle at home. Bit hazy golden with fluffy white head. Grainy, light peat, dry watery rice, mineral, but dusty apple peel notes like a very dry cider, touch of sour lemon and kumquat. Light sweet sour and bitter. Under medium bodied with a lot of carbonation. Quite weird, a bit too much carbonation but it’s not unpleasant overall.
