Brussels formerly counted a fair number of famous pils breweries, with Wiels by Wielemans, Ekla by Vandenheuvel, Jager by Roelants, and many more. Brasserie de la Senne revives this tradition of Brussels pils and presents Zenne Pils, an unfiltered, unpasteurised craft pils. Eric Toft, brewmaster from Schönram brewery in Bavaria and one of the greatest masters of the style, has coached the Senne brewers about the traditional brewing methods of this peculiar bottom-fermented beer, iconic in Germany and in the Czech Republic.
Zenne Pils was brewed with the traditional method of decoction. This adds depth and complexity to its malty character, and makes it very nicely drinkable. It is neither pasteurised nor filtered, which makes it naturally hazy at low temperatures. It develops a fine bitterness, more pronounced than that of the “pils” we are used to drink in Belgium today. Moreover, it is generously hopped with old varieties of German hops that are considered to be the most noble ones, and which the Brasserie de la Senne brewmaster directly selected at one of the best hop growers’ of the South of Germany. 4,9% abv, keg only.
The logo was designed by the brewery’s resident artist, Jean Goovaerts. The Brussels pentagon recalls our national symbol, the Atomium, as well as -and most importantly- the imminent move of the brewery to its new site of Tour & Taxis, situated in the “1000 Brussels” commune.

33 cl bottle @ home. BOT 13.07.2020, BBD 13.04.2020. Aroma has buttery malt and grass. Flavour has some grassy hops, buttery malt, hayish tones. Almost no hop bite in the finish but mild grassy burn in the aftertaste. Interesting and surprisingly faithful to the style for a Belgian pils. Rated on 2021-03-23.

BO 13/07/2020, BB 13/04/2021, 330ml bottle purchased at La Cave à Bières d'Etre Gourmet online shop;

APPEARANCE: straw, yellow like color with fair amount of haze, low transparency, stable almost snow white fluffy and bubbly head, great lacing;

AROMA: very pleasant bouquet of moderate malty sweetness and also fruitiness suggesting at pome fruits - sweet apple and hints of pear, subtle citrus fruit and stone fruits - apricot; mild notes of white bread, toast, bread crumbs and old crust, hints of lemon balm and lemon grass underneath, mild earthy and spicy notes on the edges, subtle and soft lemonade like refreshing tartness; smells quite fresh and clean for 6 months old beer

TASTE: moderate carbonation, very nice fluffy mouthfeel, medium body, quite mineral on the edges; light sweet onset supported by plain bread, soft fruitiness, definitely pome fruit esters, hints of lemon, stone fruit; pleasant medium light noble bitterness that grows up with sipping, herbal presence, hints of wormwood, wood, grass, impressions of grapefruit zest; dry and slightly mineral finish with lasting bitterness and notes of fruit candy - combo of lemon and apple;

OVERALL: great execution with no obvious flaws here; very drinkable refreshing and thirst quenching; De La Senne rarely disappoints so thumb up for this creation;

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from Figs & Grain. Pours mostly clear gold with a frothy, white head. Delicious beer, balanced sweetness, crispy biscuits, light bitter grass and straw. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Super crisp and clean finish. Lingering bitterness. Outstanding.

Flaska från Etre Gourmete. Ljusgul disig vätska med medelhögt fast kritvitt skum. Bra maltkropp, krispig men inte kantig. Doft och smak av hö, gräs, örter, blommor, bröd. Måttlig beska. Fina smaknyanser. En riktigt trevlig pilsner.

Bottle. Hazy golden color with white head. Aroma is noble hops, lemony-herbal, earthy, some yeastinessy really nice. Taste is smooth, yeasty, a bit milky, lots of lemony-earthy hops. Soft mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Very moreish Kellerpils, dry and bitter like you expect from De La Senne! 7-4-8-4-16

On tap at the brewery. Hell yeah, this is about as good as Pils gets, even in Germany. 8-4-8-4-16
