The 2019 release, Rye on Rye 6, is extra special - thanks to some fantastic barrels from our friends in Iowa. Templeton Rye is typically barrel-aged for at least four years. Occasionally, however, a special batch is allowed to slumber for two more. To our great good fortune, a truckload of those six-year barrels found their way to us. This tawny celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey delivers notes of vanilla and charred oak with a delightful, boozy sweetness.
Pouring deep garnet in color, Rye on Rye 6 pops with aromas of spicy, fruity rye malt with equally present notes of rye whiskey, vanilla, toffee and charred oak. Certainly warming at 12.9% ABV, Rye on Rye 6 is of medium body offering chewy caramel/toffee malt character balanced by earthy, herbal, citrusy Styrian Golding and Citra hops.
Fermentable Ingredients: Pale malt, malted rye, Munich malt, Cara 50, Simpson’s Crystal Rye, dextrose, brown sugar
Hops: Magnum, Citra, Styrian Golding
Yeast: Scottish ale
Aging: 10 months in freshly emptied Templeton Rye 6 barrels
Admin Note: Unlike previous batches of Rye on Rye, Rye on Rye 6 is 100% barrel-aged.

12 ounce bottle into snifter; bottled on 2/11/2019, best before 2/10/2021. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby reddish orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, prune, fig, cherry, date, peach, pear, apricot, orange zest, red apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, coconut, and brown bread/crust; with light notes of licorice, molasses, smoke, oak char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Minimal booze in the aromas as it warms. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/rye/bready malts, fruity yeast, and rye barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, prune, fig, cherry, date, peach, pear, apricot, orange zest, red apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, coconut, and brown bread/crust; with light notes of licorice, molasses, smoke, oak char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy bitterness; and bourbon, rye, oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, cherry, peach, pear, apricot, orange zest, red apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, coconut, light licorice/molasses, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/rye/bready malts, fruity yeast, and rye barrel flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness, and rye/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and rye/oak spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild increasing warmth of 12.9%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is an amazing rye barrel strong ale! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/rye/bready malts, fruity yeast, and rye barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Perfectly balanced between rich malts, fruity yeast, and rye barrel presence/integration. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering bitter/tannic dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example as expected. Loved it just as much as the base beer. Very similar to an English barleywine.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is lightly hazy light brown/dark amber with lovely lazy sparkle, ephemeral thin cap of beige head and no lacing. Aroma is dominant rye whiskey (more subtle with age) over caramel malts, tart fruit and hint of dark fruit. Taste is sweet rye whiskey, toffee, dark fruit, French vanilla. Palate is medium bodied with thick texture, soft-to-average carbonation, nice boozy warmth and rye spice, and sweet finish as taste. Overall, a nice sweet treat with more complexity to the taste than aroma.
