The 2019 release, Rye on Rye 6, is extra special - thanks to some fantastic barrels from our friends in Iowa. Templeton Rye is typically barrel-aged for at least four years. Occasionally, however, a special batch is allowed to slumber for two more. To our great good fortune, a truckload of those six-year barrels found their way to us. This tawny celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey delivers notes of vanilla and charred oak with a delightful, boozy sweetness.
Pouring deep garnet in color, Rye on Rye 6 pops with aromas of spicy, fruity rye malt with equally present notes of rye whiskey, vanilla, toffee and charred oak. Certainly warming at 12.9% ABV, Rye on Rye 6 is of medium body offering chewy caramel/toffee malt character balanced by earthy, herbal, citrusy Styrian Golding and Citra hops.
Fermentable Ingredients: Pale malt, malted rye, Munich malt, Cara 50, Simpson’s Crystal Rye, dextrose, brown sugar
Hops: Magnum, Citra, Styrian Golding
Yeast: Scottish ale
Aging: 10 months in freshly emptied Templeton Rye 6 barrels
Admin Note: Unlike previous batches of Rye on Rye, Rye on Rye 6 is 100% barrel-aged.

Effervescent tan head dissipates pretty quickly. The nose leads with the rye spice and brown sugar. The rye on rye combo really works to create a strong spiced accent that runs through the taste profile. The brown sugar from the nose continues through the taste, blending with some vanilla, bubble gum and light hoppy accents. Not a really sticky Barleywine, but a solid medium body with good staying power. I'll recommend this one!

Bottle from the lcbo. Slightly cloudy copper pour, with a large off white /beige head. Aroma is blast of oak and soft vanilla with a touch of spice. Mouth feel is soft carb is the same. Finish is light to medium bitter, brown sugar, sweet oak, and vanilla. Bordering in barrel bomb.

A later version I have, obviously, a different label and an abv of 14.3%. No matter, I’m on board. Using my all-time most used snifter from New Belgium, the sight is a dark caramel brown finished with a taupe skim. The nose is dark fruit and quite earthy. The taste is, well, I’ll say this, very, very good. Comparable to a top line Belgian Ale, I taste figs, whole grain bread, cane syrup, hay, vanilla, chocolate and dark cherries. My first rye wine I believe, what an introduction.

Bottle: Poured a murky cloudy amber color ale with a small off-white foamy head with limited retention and not much lacing. Aroma of rye notes with some woody notes and some caramelized malt is quite enticing. Taste is also a nice mix of rye notes with some woody notes and caramelized notes with some light residual sugar notes. Body is pretty full with good carbonation. Nice barrel aged rye wine.

A gushing foam emerges from the bottle at the opening. Notes of toffee, a strong and spicy alcohol, a fruity cherry and notes of old oak sticks out this powerful and explosive olfactory. The liquid is deep amber with coppery reflections, letting bubbles escape as if in slow motion and developing a small beige foam that still persists well. The caramel is present in mouth and is enveloped by the spicy and powerful alcohol. There are subtle notes of molasses, a fruity cherry flavour, and very light shades of vanilla. The finish is well spiced and the alcohol helping, powerfully warm. The balance plays between malty and spicy flavours with a slight bitterness and a very generous alcohol. The body is well rounded and fluffy with a medium effervescence and alcohol present throughout the palette. To be taken in moderation and very slowly.

Dark amber colour with a warm-beige frothy head, good stay and some some bubbly lacing. Lots of bananas in the nose with some caramel malt base. The whiskey barrel aging does show in the taste with the vanilla-banana flavours. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced to not be to rich, syrupy. I still find there is more wheat than rye, as not as spicy as the grain should do. I think the barrel aging was done for quite a long time, as this really stands out. Good if you like this.

Bottle in a trade with tfontana. Thanks Tom. The appearance is a near clear brown. Flavor shows me mild bourbon, melted toffee, oak. Vanilla nuanced from barrel aging. Slight rye. Alcohol is mostly hidden but a good warming sensation after the sip. This gets the job done.

OnTap at Prefunk, Nampa Clear deep mahogany pour with a modest but lasting and sticky beige head and lacing. Very nice rye whisky and oak aromas and flavors. This should probably be listed as a Barley Wine. Rich caramel flavors and well attenuated. Great balance of malty sweetness and clean sharp rye notes and some late faded hop bitterness. Very tasty.
