Coffee is part of a journey. A journey towards the perfect stout, towards utopia. Step by step, beer by beer, on and on. Forever! A grand canvas colored with da Matteo coffee. For any cuppy needs. Roasty!

The short story is that Coffee is one of two inaugural stouts that was first brewed for us at Dugges under the Twelve Percent beer project in the USA. We’ve done a bunch of coffee stouts so it just seemed the right thing to do while introducing our first US brewed stouts to the public. We loved that beer so much we decided to brew it again, at our own place in Landvetter, Sweden. It might be the best coffee stout we’ve ever done!

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Black, creamy beige head. Rich aroma of coffee and caramel. Sweet with full body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Coffee, treacle. Mid bitter finish. Straightforward.

The Aromas are coffee, roast, cocoa, dark malt. Flavors are like nose with sweet dominating, depression, just straight bitterness and carbonation to balance. Slight hint of metallic in there. Great body and finish. Nice beer.

16 ounce can into snifter; no can dating, but was just released. Pours dense opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and creamy khaki head with amazing retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Amazing appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roasted coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/rye/bready malts, cocoa, coffee, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roasted coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, herbal, grassy, woody, peppery hop; and roasted coffee, charcoal bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roasted coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/rye/bready malts, cocoa, coffee, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char/coffee bitterness. Medium carbonation and full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and fairly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 12%, with no booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing imperial coffee stout! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/rye/bready malts, cocoa, coffee, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the modestly bitter/charred/drying finish. Nicely soft feel, not overly bitter/charred. Insanely rich/balanced rye/oats/malts, cocoa, and fruity/nutty coffee complexity; with great earthy hop presence/balance against sweetness, and restrained fruity yeast notes. A highly amazing offering, and top tier style example. Perfectly balanced between all flavors. A bit more bitter/drying than the fudge version, but nearly just as impressive.
