The 20th Anniversary Ale is a rum-barrel aged strong ale, and comes in at a whopping 20% ABV. Despite the high alcohol content, this brew is smooth and warming with notes of vanilla and the spice of rum. Aged in rum barrels just shy of a year.

On tap at DRBT 10. Pours a cloudy amber with small beige head. The aroma is strong rum, cocoa, wood, spice. Slick body, spice, vanilla, wood, boozy finish, very good.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/23/2017. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red/copper color with a thin ring of off white head that reduces to nothing pretty quickly. Minimal lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, toasted oak, cinnamon, pepper, raisin, plum, fig, date, pear, apricot, apple, light molasses, and yeast/oak earthiness. Some increasing booze as it warms, but not too overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt and rum barrel notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, toasted oak, cinnamon, pepper, raisin, plum, fig, date, pear, apricot, apple, light molasses, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate rum/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, toasted oak, cinnamon, pepper, raisin, plum, fig, date, pear, apricot, apple, light molasses, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark malt and rum barrel flavors; with a nice malt and rum/oak spiciness balance; and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from rum/oak spiciness. Light carbonation and full body; with a silky, slick, syrupy, and tannic balanced mouthfeel that is good. A little rough on tannins, but not bad. Increasing warmth of 20% with some booze, but not too heavy. Overall this is a very good rum barrel aged strong ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark malt and rum barrel flavors; pretty smooth to sip on slowly. Got better as it warmed. Drinks more like actual rum than a beer, but maybe that was what they were going for. Nice complexities from oak, malt, and some yeast fruits. Really unique, but a very enjoyable slow sipper.
