12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark brown head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Awesome appearance. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted coconut, caramel, toffee, dark bread, herbal, floral, light pine, light smoke/char, and roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coconut, and moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted coconut, caramel, toffee, dark bread, herbal, floral, light pine, light smoke/char, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate roast/char and herbal/piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted coconut, caramel, toffee, dark bread, herbal, floral, pine, smoke, char, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coconut, and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy, moderately silky, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice American stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coconut, and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. There wasn’t a huge amount of coconut flavors like I have seen in other coconut beers lately; but there was still a good amount, and it was very well balanced with the base stout. A very enjoyable offering.
