A friend at 45 North Winery told us about the barrels. They had been used to make port wine and, years before that, bourbon whiskey. He told us about the magical patina inside each barrel and we started to fantasize about a rich dubbel that held wine and whiskey in its warm embrace. Batch #1841 has a soft nose of whiskey and lingering flavors of oak and port.

Sample at the brewpub. This brew pours a clear reddish-amber color with a medium off-white head that burns away steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Oaky aroma with dark fruit, yeast and malt notes. Medium body with flavors of vine fruit, oaky vanilla, yeast and malt, The finish is oaky with a port wine and malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, bottled on 12/17/2015. Pours crystal clear dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, apple, red wine, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, light pepper/clove, and yeast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, oak barrel, and dark malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, apple, red wine, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, light pepper/clove, and yeast/oaky earthiness. Light-moderate yeast/oak spice and light tannic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, red wine, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, light pepper/clove, and yeast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, oak barrel, and dark malt flavors; with a great malt/barrel/yeast spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Some light dryness from yeast spice and tannic barrel notes. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/silky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged Dubbel style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, oak barrel, and dark malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on. This had a lot of similar flavor complexity to some barrel aged Quads I’ve had before, but at a much lower ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
