Imperial Red IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels

What do you get when a big, bold imperial red IPA meets an oak bourbon barrel? A palate stunner that’ll send your senses spinning or, as we like to call it, Dankwood. Rich caramel notes emerge from the depths of the IPA, highlighting strong malt character while the bourbon barrel-aging develops the complexity. A dank, sticky and slightly sweet sipper, Dankwood is the perfect alchemy of wood and hops.

355ml bottle from Systembolaget. Poured copper in color. Thin white head. Toffee, wood and red fruits in aroma. Bit sticky. Lots of wood in flavor, stingy boozy, malts and bourbon. Way too boozy.

Bottle split at CBC Islington, thanks to the Wingman, 12/09/18. Hazed golden amber wiyh a decent off white cap. Nose is bitter orange, hint of barrel bourbon, caramel, spruce, tangy citric shreds. Taste comprises bitter orange, coconut tickle, caramel, candied fruit peel, light spice, bread pudding, hint of pine. Medium plus bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close spiked with dusty hops, barrel and warming alcohol. Ok DIPA / Strong crossover if a touch hot at times.

Bottle shared in London - beers to WW. Pours clear amber-gold with a bubbly white head. Punchy, some caramel, bitter old wood, ripe citrus. Full bodied, oily, with fine carbonation. Hot finish, more caramel, bread, vanilla. Not bad.

Craft Islington bottleshare. Thanks to Dave. Hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, decent fine minerally carbonation. Smooth dry malts, light creamy sweetness. Light vanilla wood. Pine. Good orange peel and marmalade. Bourbon soaked fruits. Light skunk. Some candy fruits on the back end. Light dry finish. Mildly bitterish bourbon linger. Loads going on here. Tasty and satisfying and a good case for being a dipa.

Bottle. Color: Ruby to copper, off-white head. Aroma: Hop, booze, Bourbon, hints of caramel. Taste: A lot of hop, very boozy, Bourbon notes, caramel, hints of vanilla and wood. Dry-ish, warming and bit alcohol burning mouthfeel. Strong hopbitterness, moderate to medium sweet. Overall a bit out of balance, too much booze and too little Bourbon in my opinion.

Keg @ Kilder, Birmingham. Pours a hazed reddish ruby, small creamy off-white head. Gorgeous aroma encompassing Christmas cake and dried dark fruits. Taste builds on this with moist fruit cake, some additional caramel, and modest vanilla. Nice sipper, enjoyed it.
