bottle pours light brown with a medium light tan head. Aroma is light, some toast, toffee, herbal hops. Flavor is very malt forward, biscuit and toasted malts, some nutty character but not much, and very mild hop presence in the finish. Perhaps an older bottle?

Hay and grass aroma. Clear amber, medium head. Grassy start to finish, good amount of bitterness. A bit tinny in the finish. By the end of the bottle it gets buttery as well. Full of flavor, but flawed. Not a fresh bottle, but within code, so it doesn’t appear to hold up well over time.

Off-white, quickly dissipating head over a dark amber body. Aroma has some hops and toffee all up in it, along with some mild fruity notes. The beer is somewhat bitter and has a little bit of citrusy hops in there. Not the most interesting beer, but good enough that it is a pretty good session beer. Goes down really easy and has nothing remotely offensive about it. Carbonation gave it a soda-like (this isn’t exactly what I mean, but it is what I wrote down in my notebook) kind of feel.

Draught at Pony Bar, New York
Amber color; creamy head. Dusty and earthy aroma, light. Caramel flavor, rather dry, with dark caramel bitterness at the end. More a Brown Ale than an ESB. Boring.

Tap at Mudville 9. Poured a light, amber-red with a fine white head. Nose of mildly bitter hops and some malts. Flavor is a light blend of light maltiness and mild hops. Light in body, this beer finishes crisp and fine. Not the kind of beer I would order normally, but I can certainly understand this beer’s appeal as a sessioner. Not bad.

(Draught) Poured deep red wine colour with medium sized and white head. Aroma was of malts and molasses. Medium bodied palate with medium carbonation. Tasted of malts, hops, lightly molassa and bitterness. Finished malty and bitter. Quite simple and bit boring ESB.

Interesting. Found this bottle at Vendome in Beverly Hills, CA. Dusty and the only other beer from Stoudts was a bottle of the American Pale Ale, again, just a single bottle. I didn’t know that their beers made it out here to California. Wow, old bottle...Best Before 07/08/06. Red label. Pours a somewhat unattractive shade of auburn, murky brown. Quick to revert to a ring off-white head. Aroma is earthy with raisin, baked bread, a bit of toasted coconut nearly, and some butterscotch. Taste is nice with some oxidation and sherry notes, malty and a bit fruity with brown sugar. Water like mouthfeel. Light bubbles.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly's, 5/4/09

Aroma: Earth, bread, light fruit, floral, nutty
Appearance: Hazy/clear red-orange, medium off-white head
Flavor: Some bitterness and some sweetness, tastes is mostly earthy hops and a bread sweetness
Palate: Light to Medium body, chewy mouthfeel
Overall Impression: A really nice example of the ESB style. Good job by Stoudt's on this one.
