Strong Ale Aged in Merlot Barrels

When in doubt, add wine! Not exactly a motto we live by, but we’re pretty glad we tried it for Cleveland Beer Week in 2010 and 2013. Marrying the fruity sweetness of a strong ale with the rich, dry characters of Merlot barrels from Cellar Rats birthed this pint-size bundle of joy.

Sample at the brewpub for the CBW Collaboration Kickoff on 10/18/2013. The beer pours a dark purplish-amber color with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of Belgian yeast, malt and vinous fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of yeast, oaky wine, berry and caramel malt. The finish is woody with a red wine and yeast aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, about a year old now. Pours extremely hazy and cloudy golden orange color with 1-2 fingers of a dense off white head with excellent retention that reduces to a fairly thick lacing cap. Some very nice lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of vinegar, grapes, tart fruits, and some spices. Extremely interesting aromas, but i guess thats what the wine barrels will do. Taste of light vinegar, tart fruits, spices, and grapes. No bitterness, but there is lingering notes of spice and light fruits on the finish. Alcohol is surprisingly well hidden with only a small warming on the finish noticed. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy mouthfeel. Nice balance of all flavors is present as well. Overall an interesting and unique beer, but it was quite nice and enjoyable for what it offers.

Bottle from the long sought-after Ohio Brewers Collaboration sampler. The beer pours a slightly hazy golden-orange color with a medium white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Vinous aroma with touches of earthy malt. Medium body with a wine-like character backed up by sweet malt. The finish displays some oak notes and leaves a tart vine fruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
