Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels.

Draught @ Beer Temple. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized light brown head. Aroma has malts, clearly bourbon, some sweetness. Taste malts, lightly roasty, again clearly bourbon and also a touch of sweetness. Some alcohol comes through as well which is kind of obvious at 14% ABV. Medium to full body, medium but very suitable carbonation. Very nice.

On tap @ Beer Temple. Almost black color. Dense beige/light-brown head, some lacing. Aroma’s: umami, saly/soy sauce, wood, and retronasal the full aroma’s come out: sweet, bourbon, vanilla, some red fruit, wood, lovely! Flavor is moderately sweet with a light fruity acidity, while all the aroma’s stay firmly in place. Alcohol is warming , but not like 14%. Body is medium. Finishes with ash, wood, roast, bourbon, sweet. Delicious.

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, loads of chocolate malt, dry raisins, vanilla and loads of alcohol, in your face like a silk glove. In mouth, a sweet chocolate malt, mexican chocolate with vanilla, woody notes, and loads of alcohol, intense.

Keg at CBC Clerkenwell during the Second Birthday Party - London. Pours deep black with a creamy brown cap. The nose is rife with rich burnt wood, some iodine, dark chocolate, burnt dark sugars. Big sweet flavor with rich wood and dark chocolate, licorice, modest earthy bitterness, hefty peat. Full bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Warming finish with lots of peat, chocolate, earth and smoke. Absolutely delicious. One of the best beers of the day - and the competition was fierce. This beer was dangerously drinkable.

On tap at Craft Beer Co. Too much bourbon. Loved the chocolate and its a good beer just too much bourbon for my delicate bitter palate

Draft. A pitch black beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, alcohol, and chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, roasted malt, wood, and chocolate, leading to a dry roasted finish.

Draft. Opaque black. Frothy, beige head. Aroma of smoke, bourbon, roasted malts, vanilla, wood, hint of alcohol. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, moderate carbonation. Peppery alcohol that’s only a whisper in the nose is apparent in the finish. But it’s not overwhelming and works well with the smoke, wood, chocolate and bourbon flavors.
