Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels.

Draught @ Craft Beer Co - Islington, 55 White Lion Street, Islington, Greater London, England N1 9PP.Clear dark brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting to diminishing, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, wood, coffee, sweet dried fruit, woody, alcohol - bourbon, light smoke, thin laber laver. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a long duration, wood, sweet fruit, chocolate, sweet dried fruit. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light to light moderate alcoholic. [20130807]

Draft @ Craft Beer Co, Islington N1. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty woody bourbon and chocolate aroma. Roasted malty woody strong bourbon, chocolate and licorice flavor. Has a roasted malty woody bourbon and chocolate finish.

(Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 24 July 2013) Pitch black colour with dense, beige head. Malty, roasted, vinous nose with notes of liquorice, strong espresso, soy sauce and oak wood. Malty, roasted taste with sweet and strong espresso, liquorice, soy sauce, oak wood, a touch of bourbon, vanilla and a certain coffee bitterness coming through in the finish. Full body, quite sweet. Very tasty and surprisingly well balanced for its strength. Very nice.

Keg at Cask. It pours black with a small tan head. The nose is roasty, coffee, toffee, vanilla, toasted coconut, light smoke and tar. The taste is smooth, roasted malt, earth, chocolate, light smoke, fudge, wood, vanilla, coffee, toffee and pvw with a dry, roasty finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Great depth, unbelievably smooth and well-balanced. Ludicrously drinkable, given the abv!

Tap at Beer Temple. Black colour, beige head. Nose is roasted malts, bit of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate. Flavour is roasted malts, some mocca, a bit boozy, bit of vanilla and coffee cream. Finish is creamy and fairly dry.

Tap at Craft Beer Islington, 31/07/13. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a medium sized light tan head. Nose is soft bourbon drenched oak, mellow woody notes, brown sugar, dark toffee fudge. Taste comprises light booze, well pitched bourbon notes, chocolate, oaky, toffee fudge, leather, light smoke. Full bodied, soft carbonation, smooth and caressing on the palate, light booze in the finish. Eminently drinkable for 14%, the alcohol is expertly worked into this beast. Top draw!

Craft Clerkenwell 2nd Birthday Bonanza! Opaque dark brown beer, little pale tan head. Rich toffee malt nose. Palate is smooth, soft and a little viscous. Super fine carbonation. Rich malt but not heavy despite the luxuriant cream. Very nice tangy bourbon, smooth, mellow and tasty. Super light vanilla wood. Nice touches of dark fruits and dark chocolate, Finishes smooth and soft with more luxuriant malt cream. Hides the abv well. Rich and tasty and so dangerously drinkable!

Tap @ Beer Temple, medium sample (multiple times :P). Dark color, medium creamy brown head. Aroma of biscuity bourbon, some oak, some vanilla, big roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Didn’t even notice the smoked notes that much. Medium sweet, medium bitter, like a good impy should be. The bourbon blends really nice with the base beer and never really overpowers it. Also, the 14% is hardly noticeable. Great brew.
