Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels.

Thnx to bobochamp Pours very dark brown , no foam . Smell is smoked, some sweetness . Very low carbo Taste is sweet, barrels, bourbon, bit smoked . ok .

Bottle at Hoppy pub Thessaloniki. Dark brown to black color with beige head. Smoky roasted malty aroma with alcohol and some chocolate. More alcohol in the taste, bourbon, wood, coffee.

Bottle 75 cl. Pours a very deep, dark brown with a light brown head. Intense aroma of overripe plums and sweet Bourbon. Some booze already showing. Rich body, molasses and dark dried fruit are the major impressions - rather than roasted malts. Clearly thick Bourbon in there and some rustic, wooden notes. Boozy finish. Carbonation is to the soft side. Comes together quite well and really enjoyable. 300113

Bottle. Opaque black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma of peat, bourbon, wood, chocolate, licorice, ash, smoke and toffee. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of bourbon, smoke, chocolate and toffee. Full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Nice.

Pours a light brown, minor head holy smoke nose. like a campfire Taste is nice. Vanilla, coconut and toffee. the smoke is nice but not overpowering. really a nice beer. the booze is totally hidden. hints of chocolate

750 ml bottle. Nice oily sheen on top of the stout. On a swirl of the snifter it leaves an oily film over the glass. Nose is light smoke malt, alcohol and chocolate malts. Flavor is light smoked malt, chocolate cake, vanilla oak, molasses and some toasted barely. Texture is oily. This a great sipping beer. The smoked malt is subtle and doesn’t overpower the other flavors in the stout. I cant comment on the Pappy Van Winkle barrel because I have never had it straight. however, The whiskey is a light nuance. Nice stuff.

Bottle @ Armin’s palace, courtesy of Armin. Thanks! Pours a deep black appearance with a dark brown head. Anise, somewhat smoky, dark chocolate, a touch smoky/meaty aroma. Smoky meaty, coffee, rich dark chocolate, a bit boozy flavor. Pretty tasty but not mind blowing.

thanks to beerman dan 6686 for this gem. however, i must say wtf? why are there so many different kind, can’t fing the regular. oh well now i got it. has a sloghtly oxidized initial feel to it of=n th etaste buds. smells old. first taste is what i would ccall old again sorry bout that. i guess the smoke is what i feel. big black color. from a champagne bottle. has some sweetness in ther like it was aged mild barley wine, yes, starts to come across rather pleasant after a while. Had this at the RB Pgh Halloween Spook-tacular Tasting/Drunkfest fall 2013, nice time at Hornydevil’s place, thanks James & Michelle!

Bottle: Courtesy Shrubber..... Deep brown, nearly black....thin tan cap. Aroma is smoky bourbon, caramel, wood..... Taste is vaniila, smoke, bourbon, chocolate, caramel, pepper and cream. Wow. This is, without a doubt on par with the best Imperial Stouts to be had out there..... A must have for any stout lover.

750 ml bottle shared by someone at a tasting. The pour is a clear brown golden with a small, though well formed light tan head. The aroma is slight burning smoke / roast, along with some chemical sweet, opening up to more or less straight Bourbon. The taste is sweet caramel malt and strong Bourbon, along with some graininess from the malt and a smoke to the finish. Basically a sweet, somewhat smoky beer with a huge pour of Bourbon in it. The palate is medium bodied, and the Bourbon and alcohol burns in the back. As I have told people before, I like beer, I like Bourbon; beer and Bourbon is hit or miss - this one mostly missed. Thanks for sharing.
