Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels.

Tasting at Matt’s; pink/orange wax
Black color with small beige head. The aroma is nice, dark chocolate, light vanilla. Smooth mouthfeel, yet the body is quite lean; very good chocolate flavor, yet not as rich as most De Molen beers, smoke, bourbon; correct bitterness, and barely the alcohol that it should have.
Excellent.

750mL bottle, pours black with an amber tinge and a tiny tan head. Aroma brings out complex whiskey barrels, smokiness, and roasted malt. Flavour is super complex, with lots of smoke (but in a tasteful way), complex bourbon, and slight spice. Very smoky, but somehow tasteful, with an amazing complexity from the Pappy barrels. Wow - fantastic stuff. The ABV is really well-hidden, with barely a burn. Wonderful stuff.

14 ounce draft at Row 34 poured into a snifter. Pours black with brown hues and a light tan ring, no head to speak of. Aromas of dark fruit, smoky notes, light roast, peat. Tasting notes of dark fruit, some tart fruit, smoke, a bit of bourbon. Full body with a dry and slightly warm finish. Medium carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Fairly smooth for the ABV. Not a big fan of tart/dark fruit in smoked beers so I didn’t dig this as much as I thought I would.

Bottle at Beer Temple, Amsterdam on 20th March 2014 - social share by a fellow drinker. Black with thin light tan head. Exquisite roastiness in aroma and liquid, with fiery spice and rich berry fruits. Richly velvety mouthfeel and full body. Excellent!

25/II/14 - 75cl bottle @ De Hopduvel (Gent) - BB: n/a (2014-209) Thanks to Bobochamp for sharing the bottle!
Clear dark brown beer, no head. Aroma: bourbon notes, bit sweet, cocoa powder, bit dusty, ashes, coffee, mocha. MF: low carbon, full body. Taste: little sweetness in the start, caramel, bit sugary, then sour notes, coffee, bit earthy, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: mocha, caramel, coffee, alcohol, sweet, sugary, dark chocolate, honey, bitter coffee like ending. I guess the smoke from the Scorched Monk overpowers whatever little amount of smokiness is in this beer.

Bottle shared by Sam at the RBWG 2014 grand tasting, thanks! Pours a clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice smokey note that imparts a bit of bacon backing by dark grains and bourbon. Flavor has a bit of smoke with dark grains, roasted malts and a bit of bourbon.
