Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels.

750ml bottle thanks to boisebeerguy. Pours out a dark brown almost black topped with a small tan head. Nose is roast malts vanilla cocoa barrel notes and some smoke. Taste is more of the dark roast malts smoke booze and some sweetness. Happy I got to try this one.

Pours dark reddish brown with a small fizzy mocha head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with toasted malts, caramel, vanilla fudge, dark chocolate, sweetened dark roast coffee, smoke, charred wood, roasted coconut and hints of soil and alcohol. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, corn bread, vanilla fudge, charred wood, bourbon, oatmeal, hay, soil, sweetened coffee, chocolate and hints of alcohol and coconut milk. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny sparkling, tiny dry, tiny boozy and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, tiny bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, coconut milk, chocolate, sweetened coffee, bourbon and soil. Tasty but would have loved it if it was heavier. Feels a bit light on the mouthfeel and a bit heavy on the carbonation.

Batch 1, 2013 vintage. Aroma is slightly sweet and roasty with quite a large smoked malt character. Some moderate rye notes and light chocolate and hints of dark fruit esters. Pours a dark brown but not quite black with a thick, light mocha head that recedes to the edges. Flavor is sweet with a lot of roast and chocolate. Tons of smoked malt character with hints of bourbon and oak. Medium light bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice smoked stout but the bourbon barely comes through and the pappy barrels are a bit of a waste.

02.07.2014, 0,75l bottle @ home:
Small slightly bubbly mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich, dark malts, salty licorice, oak, dark sugar, caramel, grass, whiskey, smoked peppers, soy sauce, chocolate pudding, vanilla, toast, coffee, spices. Taste is slightly sour-ish dry, oak, grass, burnt caramel, whiskey, coffee, hay, dark malts, spices, minerals. Longlasting bitterness, dry and almost a little watery mouthfeel. Fair enough, kind of expected a lot more from this one...
