Berliner Weisse named after J.F. Kennedy’s famous words “ich bin ein Berliner”, made to 19th-century production methods Schneeeule has revived so gloriously, which includes allowing for a contamination with Brettanomyces, apart from the lactic bacteria – but ‘updated’ in this case with New World hops. Snow white, mousy, opening and eventually all but disappearing head over a misty straw blonde beer with somewhat greenish tinge, turning all milky with sediment. Aroma of lemon zest, freshly cut green apples, sorrel leaves, sour milk or kefir, chalk, raw rhubarb, sourdough, lime sorbet, damp straw, vague sweaty note (the Brett), unripe kiwi, dry cider, green melon. Crisp, lime flesh-like onset with a vaguely sweetish core of green banana, apple and melon; the lactic sourness, if nowhere sharp, is however the dominant factor. Soft carb, smooth mouthfeel, sourdoughy with very obvious wheat soapiness and sourishness (supporting the lactic tartness), white-bready with a chalky note to it that lingers at the back, along with impressions of raw sorrel, sour green gooseberry and rhubarb, but also an orangey note from the hops, which otherwise remain very subtle. Damp hay-like ‘Brettiness’ is noticeable retronasally but does not overrule the rest too much, remaining a subtle hint, reminding one of the fact that originally brewers of this beer style had no means of keeping it out of their beer, I guess… In any case, for a beer style known to be ‘easy’ kettle-soured and simplistically quenching, this example has the depth and complexity Schneeeule justly insists on showing to the world as a testimony of the style’s past. This is ‘as Schneeeule as it gets’ – I’ll have a Berliner Weisse any time if they are anything like this. We are very, very far removed here from its fruited 'descendants' (Florida Weisse!) in the more hipster-oriented segment of craft brewing.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BBE 19.01.2021, from Pikkulintu, 20200501) The beer poured pale golden and cloudy. Its head was small and white. Aroma had fruitiness and spiciness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, spiciness, tartness and bitterness. Aftertaste was tart and bitter. A nice tart brew with low ABV.
