Imperial Brown Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels with Toasted Coconut Added
This is our bourbon barrel-aged imperial brown ale, Mash, stretching to new levels. Mash & Coconut features nearly 400lbs. of toasted coconut per batch, which ratchets up the complex, native coconut character and complements the oaky and vanilla notes that are imparted to the beer as part of its extensive maturation in bourbon barrels.

750mL bottle, pours a clear dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out caramel, coconut and vanilla. Flavour is along the same lines, with vanilla, coconut and caramel. Very sweet, but it's done well. Solid.

A sip (f@#* you, Brian) from the bottle on Black Christmas V. Pours a a golden with a tan head. Aroma is bourbon and dark fruits. Similar taste. Good.

Bottle @ Bruery Bonanza 2017. Deep golden brown pour with a small offwhite head. Caramel, toffee, vanilla, light bourbon & light coconut. Sweet, tiny bitter & malty taste. Plenty of coconut. Round, viscous & oily mouthfeel. Nice!

Draft at Salud. Cloudy brown color scant head. Aroma of caramel, coconut, cocoa. Taste is sweetsweetsweet nutty caramel. Sweet.

750mL bottle pours with a clear amber to deep copper body that supports a thin light tan head of foam. The modest aroma offers up sweet sugary malts, sweet sugary bourbon booze and then nutty coconut that has a slight toastiness to it. The taste delivers a smooth sugar malt sweetness, a spicy sweetened yet somewhat rough bourbon booziness and then notes of coconut floating in a sea of booze. I’m not sure what to make of this. There’s virtually no beer notes here and no cohesiveness. A paint by numbers sort of beer lacking artistic expression.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/7/2016. Pours slight hazy deep ruby red/light copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big toasted coconut, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, brown bread, vanilla, bourbon, and toasted oak; with underlying notes of golden raisin, plum, fig, date, apricot, apple, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, coconut, bourbon barrel, and moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge toasted coconut, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, brown bread, vanilla, bourbon, and toasted oak; with underlying notes of golden raisin, plum, fig, date, apricot, apple, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of toasted coconut, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, brown bread, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, dark/stone fruit, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, coconut, bourbon barrel, and moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/oak spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slight dryness from bourbon/oak spiciness. Light carbonation and very full body; with a very smooth, creamy/slick, and lightly syrupy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden; a mild warmth lingering after the finish, with zero barrel booziness. Overall this is a fantastic barrel English barelywine. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, coconut, bourbon barrel, and moderate fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Very similar to the base beer; some yeast fruitiness is overpowered by the coconut addition, but not as much as the Vanilla version. Slicker on mouthfeel and not as impressive as the other two. Still the same awesome barrel balance, without feeling boozy or overly drying on oak tannins. A highly enjoyable offering regardless.

Bottle. Pours lightly hazy hazel, small beige head, dissipates quickly, minimal lacing. Aroma is boozy, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar. Flavor is quite sweet, medium bitter, boozy, bourbon. Not getting much coconut actually . Medium plus body.

Sample at the tap room. This brew pours a murky mahogany color with a medium off-white head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, coconut and oak. Full-bodied with flavors of toasted coconut, oaky bourbon and caramel malt. The finish is boozy with a coconut aftertaste. Good beer all around.

On tap at the Bruery. Aroma is very coconut forward and rather dominant making it difficult to pick up other characteristics. Malt notes of toffee, caramel, toasted bread and nuts in the background. Pours a murky, reddish brown with no head. No lacing and sheets of alcohol. Flavor is very sweet with an intense coconut character. Light malt notes, similar to those of the aroma, hide in the shadows. Medium light bitterness with a touch of alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium light to light carbonation. Rather oily with low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but the coconut character seems too strong and makes the beer one dimensional. It is also too sweet and could be a touch drier. It’s tasty though.
