Created in 1968 to commemorate the renowned English writer, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is a limited edition barley wine. Numbered and vintage-dated to be stored for years (even over 25 years, according to those who have made it in the past); this legendary beer is finally back in production. A piece of English history we would like to share with you.

Somewhere then shared at a bottleshare (2017): pours copper with white head. Aroma is maltiness and booze, dark fruits, and toffee. Taste is sweet, large, malty, bitter. Pretty heavy hitting. This is definitely not for the uninitiated.

Thomas Hardy 2017 Bottle from Andover Liquors. I've never had this one fresh, always with many years on it. Pours a bit murky brown with a tiny off white head that dissipates almost instantly. Aromas of treacle and dark dried fruits with a touch of alcohol. Sweet dark sugary and fruity flavor but not cloying, actually finishes somewhat dry. Well not exactly dry but not sticky. Warming alcohol is a bit spicy. Its a nice sipper, might actually need some age though for the flavors to meld a little better.

2016 Vintage. Murky light brown with quick fading head. Aroma and flavour have intense sweet dried fruit. Especially orange peel marmalade. Full bodied and warming. Although sweet there's a residual dryness in the finish that keeps it in reasonable balance.

30.12.2018, 0,33l bottle (2016 vintage, bottle #00468) @ home:
Small bubbly shortlasting head, cloudy reddish golden color. Aroma is slightly sweet sour-ish fruity, dried fruits, sap, fruit stones, grass, minerals, alcohol, raisins, caramel malts, almonds, grain, butterscotch. Taste is sweet mineraly, raisins, sour grass, fruit stones, caramel malts, sap, nuts, butterscotch, alcohol, minerals, dried fruits, sugar. Medium bitterness, sweet fruity mouthfeel. Fair enough for now, it needs to be aged for a while. But it's dangerously easy drinking for the ABV...

Finally having this beer. Huge fan of the earlier versions, and this didn't let me down at all. Merry Christmas, and thanks to Eugene. Pours a clear amber hue with a small to medium white head. A big toffee and caramel nose. The flavor is sweet, berries, more toffee, deep malty note, not hot at all. A really nice recreation of the original. I've had many vintage THs, and this is close. Maybe sweeter. Lovely. Hoppy as well in the early flavors. Reminds me a bit of Doggie Claws, very hoppy at times.
