Robust Porter w/Coffee

Blurring the line between coffee and beer, our Coffee Porter treats the taste buds to a decadent romp in chocolate-covered espresso beans. Through careful selection and much experimentation, we synched up with local coffee roasters to create this exceptional brew.

Each barrel of beer is loaded with over five pounds of fresh coffee, enhancing the notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt and its native coffee character. This unexpectedly crisp and refreshing dark porter is equally satisfying on a bold winter night or a lazy summer day.

Indulge in the rich duality of Coffee Porter and let Smog City stir up your perception of "dark" beers.

12 oz. bottle in trade with AirForceHops--thanks, Chris! Appearance is very, very dark brown (almost opaque black but can see light source directly behind) with nice sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-width light brown foamy head with fair retention and mild soapy lacing. Aroma is strong, rich roasted coffee and dark chocolate with bitter offset--almost ashy. Taste is bittersweet coffee and chocolate (like a chocolate covered espresso bean) favoring the bitter, ashy side of roast. Mouthfeel is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth, thick texture, soft carbonation and finish that's a little more mellow (less bitter) than the taste. Overall, aroma and taste are strong and rich but a bit further to the bitter side than I prefer. But, well made and those liking more bitterness in their coffee beers should like this.

12 ounce bottle. Aroma of bold chocolate and coffee. Also a hint of brownie. It’s almost like smelling a cold-brewed mocha latte. The flavor has mild chocolate with long lasting espresso beans. Slight bitterness to balance. Amazing flavor for 6% Porter! Did they cheat by just adding cold brew coffee? Probably.

Bottle, as Smog City Coffee Porter. Very dark brown with a light tan head that fades slowly from 3/2. Aroma of coffee, caramel syrup, hazelnuts. Maybe there's some roasted behind. Medium bodied, clean. Not as sweet as expected and the beer has some presence along with the coffee. Mild roast, some earth, bitterness than just nips at the end. Good for a beer that (as they clearly say) is mainly about the coffee.

Tap at Takanoya. Huge, rich coffee nose, some chocolate notes as well. Mostly luscious coffee flavor, chocolate malts. Delicious, for sure, but basically just coffee.

Very dark brown color. Light brown head. Superbly freshly roasted coffee, chocolate, mocha nose. Very rich and intense for 6.0%. Light medium body, slightly acrid but not over the top. Great depth, with the roasted coffee really shining and chocolate going together in harmony. Low medium carbonation. Finishes fairly quickly but light roasted coffee lingers. Excellent

12 oz bottle. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, dark bread, gun metal. Pours dark dark brown--nearly black--with a thick tan head with excellent retention, leaving curtains of lace. Taste is lightly bittersweet with a hint of tartness with flavors like the aroma and a note of licorice; finishes with a moderate to high herbal bitterness. Very strong coffee flavor. Mouthfeel is creamy and perfectly carbonated. Nice.

Got as a gift from RaulMondesi. 500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big nutty dark roast coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, cream, smoke, charcoal, dark fruit, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big nutty dark roast coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, cream, smoke, charcoal, dark fruit, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/grassy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, vanilla, smoke, char, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an excellent coffee porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, despite the highly carbonated/drying finish. Other than the carbonation, this was very impressive. Huge amounts of fruity/nutty coffee complexity, with a spot on American porter malt profile and hop balance. A very enjoyable offering.

sample from bottle @ZZT 2017 at Benzai's, shared by TheJvd, pours black with a nice khaki head. aroma of an enormous amount of coffee, beans, roasted, chocolate. Taste has also a dominant coffee base, lots of carbo also, some hops, chocolate, roasted and toasted malts, pretty sweet, however a bit thin, slightly acidic, probably of the coffee, still nice, medium body. --- Beer merged from original tick of Coffee Porter on 15 May 2018 at 20:36 - Score: 8

Thanks to TheJvd! Bottle sampled as β€œSmog City Coffee Porter” @ ZZT 2017. Black. Nose is very heavy chocolate massive coffee roast, coffee totally dominates. Taste is huge coffee, massive, rather bitter almost herbal, bark, some cacao, interesting & nice but too much coffee & little elements for me, it is very coffee. Very thick bodied. Nice but could use a bit more balance for me but bigger coffee lovers might appreciate it more.
