Black Mettle is the dark, roasty cousin of our signature Mettle Double IPA. The fermentation profile in this Black Double IPA was adapted from our standard schedule to develop and highlight its unique flavors and aromas to ensure that it is tremendously satisfying yet beckons for another sip.

True to its name, Black Mettle presents a decidedly black color topped with a creamy, soft tan resilient head. Aromas of lightly roasted coffee greet the nose accompanied by dark chocolate covered berries, blooming conifers, and lemon wedges. The palate closely follows suit as an initial wave of juniper and sappy pine leads to a refreshing burst of vibrant orange peel and grapefruit zest. The back end lets the roasted malts shine through with a soft wash of smooth blonde roast coffee and fleeting cocoa. With a fluffy mouthfeel, medium body and a present yet gentile bite, Black Mettle’s supportive interplay between the hops and the malt bill makes each sip as unique as it is enjoyable.

Can split at L6, thanks to Leighton, 25/07/18. Light black with a well presented khaki covering. Nose carries mellow roasted tones, toffee, pine needle, charr, tropical fruit undertones, brown bread, aniseed. Taste comprises balanced roast malts, light red berry tang, charr, cocoa sprinkle, pine needle, dusty hops, liquorice stick. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close peppered with balanced earthy hop bitterness. Solid CDA work.

Can big thanks to LKS. It pours darkest brown with a small light tan head. The aroma is earthy, toasty, umami, liquorice, plum, date, prune, cocoa, sweet, sticky and parma violets. The taste is bitter - sweet, charred wood, plum, date, prune, burnt pine, charred, ashy, umami, kick of alcohol, sherbet and touch of spice with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not too shabby at all.

Level 6 Bottleshare. Thanks to Leighton for the can. Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Smooth airy palate, reasonable fine carbonation. Soft and fairly dry dark malts. Mildly bitterish dark malts. Modest pine. Surpressed fruits. Light finish. Okay.

Can shared in London - sourced via trade. Pours black with a frothy, beige head. Great snout, ash, burnt pine, grapefruit. Light-medium sweet flavour with bitter dry cocoa, more ashy roast, dried citrus rind. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more dry ashy roast, baking cocoa, citrus rind, grapefruit. Excellent.

Draught at Canton, 4/22/18 and a can dated 4/12, drunk 5/15/18.
Dark mahogany, though not quite black. Dark beige head fades slowly to cover. Seems to be quite hazy.
Strong chocolate and biscuit in the nose with light pine bringing up the rear. Lightly juicy notes of red grapefruit and meyer lemon. Clean, with no booze or resin. Just a bit more biscuit and chocolate character than Permutation #26, but not terribly significantly so. It's not like this is a specialty malt/roast bomb. It does, however, dull the hop character somewhat, and this hardly comes off in the same realm as most Trillium IPAs, at least aromatically speaking.
In the mouth it's soft, dry and malty with lots of pine and other spicy hop character on the end, yet not too bitter. Sprucey, I suppose. Light chocolate, low roast and low juice but still an ample, mostly soft, malty texture with good base malt creating light honey and caramel suggestions. Bitterness grows with warming but so does a watermelon-like yeast ester that is highly enjoyable.

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of coffee, roasted, caramel, bit sugary, more roast. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit of citrus, hoppy, bitter, roasted, coffee, some cocoa powder. Aftertaste: more hoppy citrus notes, some tropical fruits, grapefruit, soft roast, bit of caramel, some cocoa powder, vanilla touch, lovely stuff!

Very good black IPA, a fairly well-balanced blend of juicy citrus and roasted porter notes. Mildly sweet chocolate and coffee and char are offset by grapefruit and stone fruit notes before leading to a burnt pine and dank fade. Pours a pretty black-brown with a nice beige head. Slick, creamy texture's to die for. Nice beer.

Pours a black from a can, khaki head with small bubbles, minimal lacing, looks like a stout. Roasty aroma. Roasted flavor, pine, even a light orange. Pretty good beer.

I love a good black IPA and this is one of the best I've come across. Pours a dark, cola-brown-black, with massive, tan head. Aroma of coffee, burnt toast, roasted grain. Flavors include roasted grain, coffee, chocolate, citrus and pine/spruce hops. Very well-balanced and tasty. Soft, lightly sweet mouthfeel. Really, really good.
