By the time ESB launched in 1971, breweries had long been in the habit of producing an ‘ordinary’ bitter and a ‘special’. Our special was the irreplaceable London Pride so we broke the mould and added a pioneering third style: an extra special bitter, brewed to a stronger 5.5% ABV. Since then, ESB has gone on to become a recognised beer style, imitated in breweries right across the world.

Bottle at home. A fabulous beer that has achieved the perfect combination of hops and malts, the speciality malt bringing that cosy, toffee flavour to the table. A true taste of England. ------- Keg at Bishops. Taken to 3.7 from 4. An extremely gluggable and homely ale. Not a huge amount of taste but very gluggable. Probably more meaty on cask. ----- Keb at Bishops Arms. 3.7 to 3.5. A bit light and keggy. Not as glorious as I remember.(28/5/18) ----- Same conditions. Back to good times. Caramel UK malts. deep mahogany colour. homely af. 3.5 to 3.9 (5/5/19) -------------- Same conditions. 3.9 to 3.5. A mixed bag as so often in Bishops. Quite sweet. Need to try ESB on cask really. (17/11/19). ------- Same conditions. 3.5 to 3.3. Hints of macro this time. Dissapointing.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Appearance - deep copper with a very slightly off white head. Nose - fudge and brown bread. Raisins. Taste - fudge again. Prunes and raisins again. Palate - medium bodied and creamy in texture. Decent linger and decent balance. Overall - good.

0.5 bottle. Gyönyörű mély, sötét borostyán szín. Barnásfehér hab, viszonylag gyorsan apad, de a pohárra tapad. Élesztős, malátás, de háttérben gyümölcsösen komlós illat. Íze meglepően jó. Gyümölcsös, testes, keserű is megfelelő szinten. Remek komlózás. Nem lehet benne csalódni, ismét egy nagyon finom bitter.
***
Beautiful deep dark amber color. Brownish-white foam, fades relatively quickly, but adheres to the glass. Yeasty, malty, but fruity hop fragrance in the background. It tastes surprisingly good. Fruity, full-bodied, bitter at the right level. Great hops. You can’t be disappointed in it, again a very fine bitter.

bottiglia 50 cl , schiuma fine beige media persistenza, colore ambrato limpido, al naso malto caramello cereali e leggero agrumi, in bocca malto cereali caramello pane, corpo rotondo, carbonatazione piatta, dolce con amaro moderato. Buona ma non mia ha fatto impazzire. 16.03.19

Drinking this is Germany, it's probably just too old. It tastes thin and bittered, unpleasantly.

500ml bottle, unpasteurised version, from Morrisons, Darlington. The previous pasteurised version was the first beer I ever rated on ratebeer, so very interested to try this one. Pours an orange amber colour, with an off-white tan foam head leaving alittle lacing and toffee treacle marlamade aroma. Taste is malt, toffee, molasses, with orange marmalade and some earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft to medium carbonatiom, dry bitter finish. Nicely drinkable. Not as spicy and a slightly lower score than the pasteurised version.

Cask at the Vansittart Arms. Dark ambet with small frothy head. Aroma is the weak link here, everything else is spot on. Nice malty backbone with a latent bitterness. Tasty, smooth.
