Kees & Menno thought about malts. Smoked malts as the base malt for a new brew… Smoked malt from Bamberg to be precise. The choice of base malt was unanimous. But (headstrong who?) they wanted to make two different beers with it. March 14th 2017was Imperial Stout (Frack & Frick) day at our place, April 12th was Barley Wine (Frick & Frack) day at Brouwerij Kees!' place. Try them alongside to taste the obvious differences and unavoidable similarities.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is intense smoke with smoked bacon, smoked dark malt, some roast, ash, caramel, chocolate. Flavour is medium sweet and moderate to medium bitter. Body is medium. Heavily smoked, like a Bamberg Impie Stout. Very good, heavy smoke!

Pours a black colour. Head is beige with short retention. Aroma's of smoke, leather/rubber, with some chocolatey sweetness and light roast. Retronasal there's light (red) fruit additionally. Flavour is above moderate sweet, smoky, with light roasty bitterness. Medium to full bodied. Finishes with roasted malts and moderate bitterness. Still pretty good!

0.33 l bottle from 'Speciaalbierpakket.nl', bottled in April 2017. Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, dark beige head. Sweetish-malty, quite smoky and slightly roasty aroma of massive smoked ham, chocolate, coffee and some licorice. Very sweet, malty, gently roasty and quite smoky taste of nougat, coffee, hazelnut, quite some smoked ham, licorice, peat and iodine, followed by a long, moderately roasty-bitter, gently peaty and slightly medicinal finish. Full body, smooth and creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite intense, maybe a bit too sweet, but overall very tasty. Interestingly, I get beechwood smoke in the aroma but mainly peat in the taste as well as in the finish.

Bottle, 11C. Black with a cm of dense tan head that never quite disappears. 3+ Aroma of smoked caramel, dark chocolate, blackberries, vanilla, pepper. Silky with moderate to low carbonation. Sweet caramel with bittersweet chocolate, smoke and modest roasted and bitter flavours to balance. Are they quite enough? After 100ml or so, yes. And then coffee creeps up to overtake the chocolate and then the smoke. Intriguing, good.
