Kees & Menno thought about malts. Smoked malts as the base malt for a new brew… Smoked malt from Bamberg to be precise. The choice of base malt was unanimous. But (headstrong who?) they wanted to make two different beers with it. March 14th 2017was Imperial Stout (Frack & Frick) day at our place, April 12th was Barley Wine (Frick & Frack) day at Brouwerij Kees!' place. Try them alongside to taste the obvious differences and unavoidable similarities.

Bottle at home, 30th November 17. Black beer, no head. Aroma is smoky, liquorice, meaty. Taste is liquorice, smoke, sweet, wood, barrel. Lovely smooth drinking.

Bottle from Bierkoning. Black with a small tan head. On the sweet side with smoke, dark malt, chocolate and light wood. The body was full and the finish long. A pleasant one.

Bottle at Beerlovers Bar. Pours black, decent, off white head. Smell is pure smoked ( smoked saucage ) to a metallic point, almost. Taste is smoked, sharp, burnt malts. intense on the smoke ( too intense, even people who do like smoke might agree ) medium MF and carbo.

Bottle, 330 ml, shared with JFK10000 and Max. Pours black with light brown head. Roasted malts, smoke, ham, chocolate, bitter finish, medium+ bodied. Full bodied.

Tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen - Black pour with tan head. Roasted smoked dark malty, some meaty charred burnt notes, medium body, dark smoked roasted malty finish.

Tap.Pitch black colour with large beige head.Aroma is strong smoked with flavor of meat and tar even caramel and chocolate,nice with strong mouthfeels and good full body.

Draught @ Mig & Ølsnedkeren. Pours very dark brown with a light brown head, lacings. Aroma of rich smoked malt, little caramel, little chocolate, light earthy, nicely smoked fish, smoked herring. Flavor is sweet, rich smoked, malty, caramel, chocolate, licorice, smoked meat / fish, light alcohol. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, sweet smoked finish with warming alcohol. Gets somewhat sticky and hard to drink as it warms. 141017

Tap @ Mig & Ølsnedkeren, 10.6%. Almost black with small beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel, meat and smoke. Flavour is roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, meat, smoke, sweet, little ash, warming, notes of liquorice with notes of alcohol.
