Kees & Menno thought about malts. Smoked malts as the base malt for a new brew… Smoked malt from Bamberg to be precise. The choice of base malt was unanimous. But (headstrong who?) they wanted to make two different beers with it. March 14th 2017was Imperial Stout (Frack & Frick) day at our place, April 12th was Barley Wine (Frick & Frack) day at Brouwerij Kees!' place. Try them alongside to taste the obvious differences and unavoidable similarities.

Bottle picked up at De Molen Brewery, Bodegraven, Netherlands, consumed at Somers Wood Caravan Park, with Dad and Pauline. Friday 6th October 2017 Pours black with a slim light beige head. Wow quite a smokey nose, really smokey. A beautiful beer a wonderful combination of smoke, treacle, dark thick molasses, it's thick in the mouth with fumes coming down the nose, superb beer . Zwart bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is erg bitter en rokerig met iets van vanille, rook, sterke koffie en bittere chocolade.

(thanks for sharing!) Sampled draft @ The Beavertown Extravaganza 2017. Day 1. Dark brown. Nose is massive huge BBQ smoked bacon, smoked wood, suck thick malt, Lapsang Souchong, insane. Taste is that thick gravy smoked BBQ, extremely thick malt but also balanced sweet malt, caramel, liquid smoke, Lapsang Souchong, extreme. Sometimes De Molen still hits a homerun.

Tap at Beavertown Extravaganza. Darkest brown color with tan head. Aroma is smoked ham and minerals, and lots of it. Taste is smoked, earthy malts, touch chocolate, raisins. Silky and full mouthfeel. Excellent, this is almost Schlenkerla smoke, but with some extra topfermentation. 8-5-8-5-17
