Back in the Colonial days, molasses was used because barley was in short supply. The molasses gives the beer a little sweetness and a nice caramel flavor.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 10/5/12, 7% ABV
Aroma: The nose is sweet and roasty, with some molasses, roasted coffee, and chocolate
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with an orange hue, a small head, and pretty much no lace
Flavor: The taste is pretty much all sweet and roasted malts, and it very similar to the nose
Palate: The body is medium, though feels just a touch thin for the style, and has a soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This one is a solid porter. I enjoyed it, but I didn't absolutely love it. Still, I feel like it hits on what this style should be pretty well.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark reddish brown color with a thin brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, brown sugar. The taste is roasted malts, molasses, brown sugar, bitter hops. Medium bodied and chewy. Solid beer.
