Modernism is inspired by the Czech black lager tradition. It features a deep complexity from the decoction process and a hop schedule typical of Bohemian beers. Notes of dark malts, bittersweet chocolate and caramel dominate. The finish is dry.

Fresh can. Aroma is mild charred roast, mild coffee, smoke hints. Flavor has a strong roasted backbone with a medium plus mouthfeel for a session ale. Nuts. Smoky/ roast that vanishes in the finish. Really great!

Dark, burnt umber with some lighter milk chocolate hues and a large, nicely retained beige head.
Tons of dried toffee, hazelnuts, walnuts, brown bread and other lovely malt complexities to open the nose. Soft yeast minerality, dried leaves from the hops and a touch of milk chocolate. Very elegant as usual from Schilling and quite authentic methinks. No alcohol or flaw.
Taking a sip, it’s lusciously soft, malty and rich with tobacco and coffee tinged milk chocolate maltiness. Drying out significantly towards the finish with dry roast, very light anise/prune notes and a graham cracker and dry toffee character that pleasing balances the former sweetness. Tightly carbonated, soft texture. Some minor astringency/anise/old coffee characteristics are the only detractor here.

On tap at The Blackback, Waterbury, VT.
This was poured into a tulip. Oh drat, yeah well.
The appearance was a nice looking dark brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than thirty seconds leaving some light lacing here and there.
The smell had some light dry grassy hops slyly moving into roasty coffee.
The taste was mainly the same. Dry in the aftertaste and finish
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly smooth and light.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good dark lager. I could see myself coming back to this.

A burnt brown color, 2 finger tan head Biscuit and charcoal malts with a hint of toffee and chocolate. how do these guys do it? The start and I was all like….sigh too smoky, too dry then boom middle of the palette sweetness with a creamy very light lactose taste and lingering table sugar sweetness of cream, chocolate, charcoal, some tobacco leaves and very clean lager mouthfeel and overall taste. Unique and completely to style.The thing is, it’s not really my thing but a very clean and solidly crafted brew. awesome work.
