Modernism is inspired by the Czech black lager tradition. It features a deep complexity from the decoction process and a hop schedule typical of Bohemian beers. Notes of dark malts, bittersweet chocolate and caramel dominate. The finish is dry.

Blik gedeeld door Keukeman, geprobeerd met Benzai. Het is een diep donkerbruin bier met een dun schuim welke snel weg ebt. Het heeft een moutige geur. De smaak is moutig licht gebrand en zacht zoet.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown with a finger of beige head that dissipates. Toasted malt, cacao, coffe and charcoal/sumi aromas. Dry on the palate with toasted vanilla and molasses with baker's chocolate and light herbal hop notes. Drying finish with some mineral, coffee and herbal notes that linger.

Draught at Glorietta Baldy: pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is dark fruits, nutty, molasses, light hints of chocolate and coffee. Slightly roasty. Nice chewy texture. Mild bitterness and light sweetness. Quite good.

On tap at Churchkey, pours a translucent, murky dark brown with some khaki head. Nose is quite nice, malty, dry bread, a little date, yeast. Flavor has some tamarind maybe, malt, bread, yeast. Finishes medium bodied, dry. Exceptionally well made and spot on for the style.

Very nice stuff for a dunkel. Sharp roast and a bite of dark chocolate like you stole some kid's candy on Halloween. Black pour with good head and lacing. Light bitter end. Very well balanced and belongs near top of category. Tap at Churchkey.

Can from Candia Rd Dark brown in color brilliant clarity, small off white head dissipates quickly. Rich toasted bread with dark dried fruits and a bit of floral and earthy hops to counter. Really tasty beer.

Can pour into nonic pint glass. Appearance is clear dark brown (more ruby to mahogany with light source directly behind) with trace sparkle, finger-width foamy beige head with fair retention and trace lacing. Aroma is combination roasted malts with earthy bitterness. Taste is same combination as aroma but slanted a bit to the earthy bitterness side, mild nuts. Palate is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, average carbonation with more pronounced roasted malts in the roast/earthy bitterness mix at the finish than the rest of the taste. Overall, I think pretty true to the style with perhaps more noble-type earthy hop bitterness than expected. Good, but I get more excited about a Black IPA, Porter or Stout of one form or another.

Pours mahogany tinged cola into a stein. Mocha head with good retention recedes to hug rim. Pumpernickel and chocolate aromas. Medium bodied and dry with milk chocolate, roasted malt and pumpernickel front to back before the earthy dark molasses finish. Refreshing.
