This English porter is an example of the delicate balance between complex English malts and fine European hops. Scottish Golden Promise barley, American two-row pale malt and two different types of English chocolate malts create a subtle chocolate cereal character supporting an earthy, orangey flavor and aroma from Slovenian Celeia hops.

On tap at Cellarmaker, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out British malt, bready notes and oats. Flavour is very hearty, with plenty of oats, light roast and bready malt. Hearty and well-balanced. Really a great example of the style.

Pours black in the middle with dark brown edges. Nice khaki foam. Lots of lacing. The liquid seems cloudy, but the color makes it hard to tell, obviously. Very portery flavors - what a silly thing to write. Mild coffee, some roast, a little dark chocolate, good dose of caramel. Pretty big on cola, which is actually what I associate with porter and don’t really love. Mild vegetal note, probably from the hops. Relatively mild milk chocolate. The taste follows the aroma, which I could write for the vast majority of beers, but there’s more roast and cola flavor. It’s relatively dry. Vegetal and cola finish, which sounds bad but it’s a pleasant enough flavor. A little bit of ash and more caramel. Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy but gets a touch thin in the finish. Pretty good porter but not in the same league as their hoppy beers.

Draught @ Cellarmaker, San Francisco, California

Pours pitch black with a small head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and licorice. Taste is smooth, slightly watery with some roasted malts and chocolate notes. Finish is smooth, weak bodied and creamy with some roastiness. A bit too light bodied, but balanced porter. --- Beer merged from original tick of Batch 1 Porter on 11 May 2014 at 18:48 - Score: 7

Sample at the taproom. Dark brown color with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, chocolate and coffee. Light-bodied with flavors of roast coffee, chocolate malt and slight hops. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Decent overall.

Pitch black, far from oily hard to get much of a nose on this one. A touch of chocolate maybe? No where as flavorful as Kelly’s or cigarettes. Sweet chocolate with creamy milk and burnt marshmallows summarize this one. Burnt ash and ashtray sort of make it hard to finish. I can see this one evolving ad look forward to trying it again
