On tap at Legend, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and some bready notes. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt and a hint of earthy cocoa. Nothing special here, but it's drinkable.

Location: On Tap at Legend, 12/26/09
Overall Impression: This was a pretty nice Porter, more on the dry side then the sweet side for this style. A nicely made beer.

Very dark brown that went opaque, modest head. Rich aroma has chocolate and anise. Flavor is robust, tangy, moderately astringent with chocolate and mild roastiness, hints of anise. Full and rounded mouthfeel but not malty sweet, actually semi-dry. It seemed really good at first but didn’t motivate me to finish it.

Bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Dark chocolate brown pour with a medium head and decent lacing. Milky roasted malt aroma with some chocolate notes. Mocha like taste with slight tartness and bitterness. Something seems to be missing, but still very pleasant. Body is somewhere between thin and medium.

22oz bomber. Pitch black color with a nice, frothy head. The aroma is pleasant enough, not really displaying many chocolate or roasted malt qualities. The taste is off in my opinion, quite sour and pungent. I like sour beers and don’t really fit the style-Nazi mold, so i can deal with it and accept it for what it is. I’d assume it would be a little different on tap. The roasted malt sweet taste comes through but the sourness is really there, not unlike a Rodenbach.

Draft at Legend brewery: Coffee and bacon bouquet. Black pour with a dark brown head. Tastes of coffee and soy sauce on the edges. A curious beef fat flavor is also present and distracting. Finish is smoke coupled with fat or lard.

Tap. Pours black with a small brown head. Light malts in the nose. Flavor of bittersweet chocolate that bitters the deeper into the beer you get.

Thanks to Numenor for this. Pours almost black with a dark tan head that falls rather quickly. Spicy chocolate and caramel aroma. Slightly sweet with some burnt notes at the sides. The chocolate that was hinted at in the aroma fails to appear as a flavor profile, leaving only the burnt malt there to fend for itself. Some sourness as well. O.K., but not the best.

22 oz. Bottle. Dark color, like midnight black with light brown head. Caramel, chocolate flavor, with something I can’t quite grasp. Pretty good overall, and not as filling as other porters I have tried.
