A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart.
Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. It’s triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO.
What about Stone Vertical Epic Ale 01.01.01? Well, there are two reasons for its non-existence: (1) We didn't want to participate in the whole overhyped media nonsense of "Millennium this" and "Millennium that," and (2) we didn't think of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale idea until the fall of 2001 (which was already too late for a 01.01.01 version.) Sure, we could wait until the year 3001 to start this series, but we were afraid that with all that time between now and the next millennium, we might forget. Besides, that millennium will probably be overhyped as much as the last one.

Hazy blonde. Thin head. This is floral and sticky, with maybe a light orange, and a touch of alcohol. So strong and sticky, with light spicy. A bit underattenuated for my taste, though the spice does lend a nice hit of dryness to the finish.

22 oz. bottle, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, light citrus, alcohol and tons of esters. Flavour is very estery, with lots of alcohol, Belgian yeast, and some phenols. Nowhere close to an authentic Belgian Strong. An estery and boozy mess. Not good at all.

Nice fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly dry mineraly, weeds, yeast, fruit stones, overripe banana, minerals, sour grass, hay, flowers, alcohol, spices, bark, metal tank. Taste is harsh mineraly, weeds, yeast, bark, booze, minerals, medicine, fruit stones, paper, metal tank, spices, old leafs, harsh citrus peel. Medium to longlasting bitterness, harsh medical mouthfeel. Meh!

66 cl bottle @ Timo A. Bottled 22.07.2016
Aroma has soapy tones, citrus, spices and Belgian yeast. Flavour has soapy tones, spices, Belgian yeast and bretta with urinal cake. Quite something it promises to be; a Belgian (bretta)beer with spices. Rather light for a 7.5% beer.

The original 02.02.02 was the only one I missed. I drank the 03 to 12 Vertical I had in 2013.Glad they rebrewed this so I could complete the series. I will wait for the 03 that I loved. Nose is light banana, cloves, and a hint of bubblegum. Very lightly hazy yellow gold with a lightly lacing off white head. Flavor is fruity and spicy with a small amount of bitterness. Wish I had the original in 2002 with a early dated rating.

Bottle thanks to Luke. Pours a bright orange color with a large white head. A big fruity sulfur nose. Spicy, banana esters, light toast and hops, a bit of orange peel and pepper. Solid.

Nice appearance, more or less clear, intense carbonation and a fine layer of head. Aroma is very Wheaty and spicy, pepper, coriander, a bit funky, very refreshing. Very refreshing taste as well, wheat is dominant, spicy, pepper, hints of coriander, Belgian flavours, sweet and rich, very rich for a wit. Nice!
