Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island’s brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacao nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with every sip.

Acquired this in NYC at Rattle n’ Hum. Enjoyed in a snifter at 50 Degrees F.
A - Poured a semi-thick oily beer. Midnight black, completely black showing no light through. No head at all.
S - Muted nose, hints of roasted nuts and mocha. Some dark chocolates and candied sugars.
T - Wow. Huge chocolate bomb at the start. Like a high cocoa chocolate bar from Belgium. Sort of an oaky woodiness and lots of roastiness at the finish.
M - Heavy body. Mild carbonation.
O - Would be great to taste this beer after sitting in a bourbon barrel.

Bottled@Monks Café Stockholm (backlog). More or less black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is some slight toffee, mild roasted malts, some ripe fruits, raisins, alcohol and some quite strong liquorice and fudge as well. Flavour is roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate along with big time liquorice, some alcohol as well as mild toffee. Balanced.

22 oz. bottle, sent from BigTomz (thanks!), pours jet black with a small, quickly-dissipating brown head. Aroma of rich treacle toffee, rich chocolate cake, liqueur-coated dark fruits and some roasted malt - not very similar to BCS. Flavour of liqueur-coated dark fruits (prunes) upfront, treacle toffee, chocolate cake and vanilla - high sweetness - a little cloying after a while. Palate is quite viscous and oily, with a liqueur-like feel and vanilla aftertaste. Too sweet, which becomes more and more apparent with each subsequent sip.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours an opaque black with a light brown head. Sweet roasty, vanillaish nose with quite some booze showing. Solid body, sweet and pleasant roast, some sweet chocolate and pruney fruit. Warming alcohol finish where the hops never prevail. Lovely. 030312

Bottle at Monks Porterhouse. Clearly a relative to the burbon county stout. Very choclatey with some salmiak.

Deep black body with a brown head. Fine, well balanced aroma of strong malts, coffee, chocolate: very intense, complex and well balanced. Heavily sweet, moderately bitter flavour, a little bit too sweet and unbalanced to some extent. Not bad, certainly not great.

Pitch black colour, slight tan head. Aroma of chocolate sauce, malts, molasses, quite alcoholic. Flavour is really sweet. Chocolate, sweet malts, roasted tones, slight salty touch. One could’ve even called it balanced if it hadn’t been so overly sweet. Again quite alcoholic, like a rum chocolate bonbon. Full body, alcoholic finish.
