12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark, reddish, brown color, with a huge, frothy, persistent, beige head. The nose is pine sap, burnt toast, pumpernickel, lemon zest, and rye. Malty and sweet, with an abrasive bitterness. Pretty fair.

Bottled. Cloudy copper colour, rich head - mildly gushing. Grapefruit and pine up front. Dry and spritzy with medium body. Resiny with some caramel, lots of piney grapefruit. Aggressive bitter finish with some metal.

Reviewed from notes. Consumed June of 2013.
At the brewpub, this was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a hazy burnt orange to ruddy brown color with a decent hazy tinge of amber. Bar pour yielded no head and there wasn’t any lacing then.
The smell had some nice earthy nutty to caramel malts lightly sweetened and just a small dose of English malts in there as well.
The taste was a decent blend of sweet to bitter through the malts carrying the flavor.
On the palate, she sat right on the medium side of the body. The carbonation seemed appropriately styled as it was mainly subdued.
Overall, not bad for an ESB made by an American brewer. I probably would have again if available but probably wouldn’t necessarily need to seek out either.
