26th Nov 2016: 33cl bottle in ’t Brugs Beertje. Clear golden pour, white head. A bit ’fizzy’ or highly carbonated whichever you prefer. Grainy, sweet-corn sort of brew that grew on me as it seemed to change flavour in the mouth, citrusy and herbal notes took over from the sweetness mid-sip: weird. Should of had another I suppose, but we were on a mission so did not have the time.

Geel bier met mooie schuimkraag die wat snel inzakt. Smaak is licht zoet en bitter hoppig, ananas en ietwat peerachtig wat smaak betreft. Goed bier.

Another tripel from Anders, commissioned by a new beer company in Hasselt. Named after the ladybug and being something of an amateur entomologist, I felt this is something I definitely had to taste. Frothy, thick, creamy, egg-white head leaving membranous lacing on the glass; colour is a misty golden blonde with ochre hue. Aroma of banana-flavoured bubblegum (as is often the case in tripels), gooseberries, coriander seed, freshly cut nettles, tropical flowers, goat cheese, grass, Granny Smith apple, toasted white bread, dry white wine, oude ’jenever’, canned apricot, white pepper, unripe pineapple, vanilla-flavoured ice cream, cantaloupe, damp straw, cooked turnip. Fruity onset typical of Belgian yeast, estery with hints of gooseberry, banana, some passion fruit, some mandarin; spritzy carbo, smooth and lightly oily mouthfeel, pale malt sweetness with a honeyish touch superseded by phenolic yeastiness yielding retronasal spiciness but not overly so (i.e. not turning glue- or nail polish remover-like), herbal and earthy hop bitterishness in the end bringing some balance against the estery and malty sweetness, a bittersweet coating of oily coriander and of course a glow of warming, young ’jenever’-like alcohol. Nothing wrong with this in terms of tripel (because even though it is listed as a "Belgian strong ale" here - whatever that may be - this clearly is intended as a tripel); technically okay, but clearly lacking in inspiration. Perhaps adding actual dried ladybugs would prove a good idea? I heard they’re mildly poisonous, but I had tobacco beers as well and the same thing can be said of them too...
