Our favorite porter with just a touch of the tropics. This Coconut Victory at Sea takes our popular Imperial Porter to another place. We added sweet roasted coconut to our robust porter brewed with Caffe Calabria coffee and vanilla, the perfect complement to this beer’s subtle roasty intensity. A favorite at our annual Victory at Sea Day, but it’s worth enjoying anytime you need to be transported.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/29/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big toasted coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, cream, marshmallow, caramel, toffee, dark bread, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, coconut, vanilla, and coffee notes; with great strength. Taste of big toasted coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, cream, marshmallow, caramel, toffee, dark bread, floral, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of toasted coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, cream, marshmallow, caramel, toffee, dark bread, pine, char, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of of dark/roast/bready malts, coconut, vanilla, coffee, light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/hop bitter/sweet balance. A bit of lingering hop/char astringency, but not overwhelming. Light-moderate dryness from hop/char bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, fairly sticky, and lightly slick balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome imperial porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of of dark/roast/bready malts, coconut, vanilla, coffee, light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. This was still quite bitter and drying, but not overwhelming; even after 4 months of age. My experience with the base beer is similar, and this would be worth revisiting in 6 months or more. This will definitely improve later, but is still really enjoyable right now.

Tap at the Hair of the Dog, Phrom Phong Ballast Point tap takeover. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin white head and lots of clingy lace. The aroma is roasty malt, lots of coconut of course, dry coffee and some vanilla. The flavour is moderate to light sweet with a roasty smooth dry liquorice, aromatic floral hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Pours black with slight mahogany tinge into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Coconut, vanilla and chocolate aromas. Dark chocolate covered coconut upfront turning to charred to souring espresso in the lasting finish.

Draft at Zany Graze. Dark brown color with a finger of creamy tan head. Aroma is rich with coconut, strong in fact. Light bits of roast and cocoa. Flavor is a little more balanced between the coconut, roast, espresso, and dark chocolate. Still a little on the sweet side with more coconut than expected, but good.

Draft at Sunset Grill and Tap. From notes: pitch black with some lasting head. Aroma is toasted coconut flakes, mild coffee and a good amount of roasted malts.

The flavor is very much a stout with a coconut "Mounds" candy bar. Good roasted backbone. The mouthfeel is fuller and is damn near stout like. Has a chewy fullness. The alcohol was shown just a little bit. I loved the 4 oz sample and could have drank much more.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out loads of coconut meat upfront, followed by a little vanilla and little cocoa. Flavour is along the same lines, with loads of coconut dominating upfront, followed by vanilla and light cocoa. The coconut is super dominant, with light-medium swertness. Wonderful stuff.
