With an aim of finding a fairly marked coffee after-taste, we have chosen to use the most torrefied barley malt that can be found on the market – Black malt at 1400 EBC. As this malt is a bit acrid, we have “corrected” it by using another slightly caramelized malt (150 EBC), and some brown sugar. So that the hops can exist alongside these strong caramelized and torrefied malt flavours, we have mainly opted for the strong American hop, Tomahawk.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours black with a large thick foamy beige head. Faint aromas of roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate and caramel. Taste is a touch sweet with more dark fruits, plums, some ash, roasted malts, a little chocolate and a little brown sugar. Quite nicely balanced between roasty and sweet. Medium to full body with fairly low carbonation and smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Pretty good!

Bottle ordered from beers of Europe and drunk at home. Dark brown and translucent with a swirl of off-white head. I get liquorice, herbal notes, light astringency. Taste is bittersweet with more aniseedy flavours, some dusty cocoa and plums. Finish is slightly more bitter, with a medicinal character in the aftertaste. Body is very watery, especially for the ABV, with carbonation slightly heavier than average. It's surprisingly subtle for the style, and overall enjoyable.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with average, firm, frothy, moderately lasting, considerably lacing, beige head. Roasty dark malty and grassy, hoppy aroma, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, green onion, lemon zest. Taste is moderately bitter, roasty, chocolately dark malty and grassy, slightly citrusy hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, hints of grass, lemon, lemongrass, some orange zest, a touch of green onion, minimally metallic overtones; lingering, chocolately and citrusy, minimally sticky finish. Well hopped, serious Black IPA resemblance. Subjectively ... NOT the best stout in the world! ... but quite high in the charts. Very good!

Bottle from a belgian beer supermarket, unknown now as it has been ageing with me for at least two years. Aroma of predominantly red wine, and sometimes hint of strawb sweets. Watery stout apperance. Tate is equally red wine, mastic, sweet dr pepper mixed with tobacco. Oh and bready yeast. All round odd to be honest. Not terrible, just odd. 1 month past sell by date.
