An innovative style that matches roasty notes with fruity/hoppy ones. Dry hopped with Sorachi Ace, there are hints of coconut coming through the toastier flavours of the darker malts.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - batch 0035 - bottled on Oct 13 - BBE Oct 14, at Black Door, 20140117) The beer poured black. Its head was very small and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, pine and fruitiness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, fruitiness, ash, coffee and bitterness. Aftertaste had burntness and bitterness. Way too burnt.

Bottle at home in London from Sourced Market. Aroma is earthy pine hops with woody roast. Clear black caramel red colour with a persistyent loose light tan head. Flavour is nutty malt, wih some chocolate. Hops are pine and earthy lemon and coconut. Man i freaking love sorachi ace. The earthyness of the sorachi ace plays really well with the smooth roast malts. Palate is medium full, somewhat chewy and medium carbonation which lifts things nicely. Lingering biterness and roast. Very balanced and drinkable. Really Very good.

Bottle, Kris Wines, London. Deep dark brown pour with a small tan head. Roasted malt and citrus in the nose and flavour alongside some decent hoppage and fruit notes. Smooth and pleasant to drink. Tasty stuff.

(Draught at Bishop’s Arms Linnégatan, Stockholm, 9 Nov 2013) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted, hoppy nose with black coffee, pine needles, ashes and hints of mint. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, pine needles, dark bread, grapefruit, mint and a generous roasty, piney bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Solid and well made black IPA. Very nice.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Black body with a massive tan head. Excellent lacing. Wonderful aroma of kiwi fruit, plum, lime, milky coffee and flowers. Flavour of pine needles, tangy grapes and chocolate. Also lightly roasted malt but not as deeply roasted as other Black IPAs I’ve tried. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. A flavoursome, fruity Black IPA. Weird Beard certainly know how to pack their beers full of flavour.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is grassy hop. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a lovely grassy nettle hop, spicy, liqourice palate and a smooth lingering bitter finish. This is a beer packed full of flavour and super refreshing.

Cask at Pivni, York. Almost black, with a thick, tight, lasting beige head. Very handsome. Ripe blackberry fruitiness, some roasted coffee and just the right side of hoppy bitterness. Silky on the palate.

Cask, handpulled cask at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimco. Almost black as pitch. Sparse tan-coloured head. Dark fruity nose, lightly spiced. Leafy hops together with dark malts to the taste buds. Nicely roasted bittersweet round off. Fresh and nice, possible my best during the evening of Weird Beard tap takeover (London 12.08.2013).
