Keg at BBP. It pours hazy reddish - brown with a foamy off-white head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, oily, sugary, fruit cake, dried fruits, rivita, varnish and oak The taste is quite sweet and sticky upfront, bitter, oily, fruit cake, toasted brown sugars, earthy, resin, spice, charred wood, tannin, black tea with a drying finish. Medium body, foamy carbonation and chewy mouth - feel. Fair enough stuff.

14/VI/17 - 33cl bottle from a trade @ home - BB: X/2016 (2017-921) Thanks to Bierridder_S for the trade!

Little cloudy purple brown beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: metallic impression (although no metallic when you do the foam on hand trick), sweet, caramel, bit spicy, malty, some chocolate. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet start, lots of dark chocolate, caramel, bit sourish, fruity notes. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, hoppy, some alcohol, sugary, caramel, vanilla touch, burnt raisins, hoppy finish, pretty fruity, lovely beer, especially on warming up. Very decent!

F: thin, tan, quick gone. C: dark coppery, hazy, red hue against the light. A: malt, caramel, toffee, molasses, dates, banana, honey. T: malt, caramel, molasses, toffee, light fruity, honey, brown sugar, medium to full body, low carbonation, not exactly for the style but still good balanced and enjoyed, 33cl bottle from the brewery.

Draft @ BBP, merci 77ships. Cuivre, col fin beige.

Pours dark brown, small white head. Smell is rich grainy, bit sweet. rather intense. Taste is bit bitter at start, builds up more towards the end, but never really gets that bitter. Rich maltyness is there, that’s for sure. I miss the great silky body a BW usually has, but than again, these silky BW’s are usually 10-15 ABV, whilst this is 7.3. So all and all, the body and carbo are agreeable. I do get hint’s of the peppers, but it’s in no way ’hot’ , and it’s very hidden ( I only taste it cause I know it’s in there ) All and all, this might not be a seek-out beer or BW , but it’s a great one to just drink whenever you find it. Like all BBP beers, great quality, I just miss a spark of ’extreme’. I prefer beers with guts, both negative or positive. Than again, this is what they stand for (balanced, out of the ordinary beers of very good quality ) and they do this in the best way imaginable.

At Brussels Beer Project, their latest experiment at the time of visiting. Thick, frothy, egg-white, densely structured, lacing head over a hazy, deep warm reddish bronze beer. Aroma of dried fig, raisins, caramel, hazelnut oil, coriander seed, cognac, brown sugar, dried banana, candied cherries, marmelade, honey, dried ginger. Sweet onset, residual brown sugar sweetness, impressions of candied date and raisins, sourish blue grape-like touch, medium carbo, smooth and thick, supple mouthfeel. Caramelly and slightly nutty malt sweetness in the middle, candied cherry and brown sugar sweetness lingering, spicy notes in the end along with drying, peppery hop bitterness and some warming, rum-like alcohol. Tasty beer for sure, but not a barley wine, this is not nearly as vinous (and strong) as it should to belong to that style; more a Belgian strong brown ale, sweet, smooth, caramelly and ’fluffy’ with spicy notes, but with a much more hop bitter tail than is classically the case in this context.
